Southall - Lloris is better than De Gea

Neville Southall, the former Wales and Everton goalkeeper named Football Writers Association Footballer of the Year in 1985, has explained why he believes Tottenham and France No 1 Hugo Lloris is a better goalkeeper than the wantaway Manchester United keeper David De Gea.

For younger readers who may not know who Southall is, he was one of the best keepers of his time, he was named in the PFA Team of the Year for four consecutive seasons, and was listed as one of the world's top ten goalkeepers by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics on four occasions. He was named as one of the 100 'Greatest Players of the 20th Century' by World Soccer magazine and in 1995 he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to football.

Since hanging up his boots Southall has managed in Kent at non-league level, coached at many clubs, he has also set up his own educational consultancy and has worked extensively with disadvantaged children, something I can tell you from personal experience is very satisfying, the emotional benefits are immense.
"It's my opinion and I think Lloris has a better body shape. I think he saves less with his legs. De Gea's problem is his technique's not as good as Lloris because saves a lot more with his legs because he's falling backwards a lot more. Don't get me wrong, he had a terrific season last year but if I was picking someone to go in my team, I'd pick Lloris over anyone else in the world except Neuer."
Whether you agree with him or not it's an opinion to respect from someone who knows a thing or two about the art.
