Is Honda an upgrade on Lamela & Townsend?

Glenn Hoddle, Harry Redknapp, Robbie Savage all suggested that Tottenham need more attacking talent after watching us on Saturday.

It was the first game of the season and knee jerk reactions are not the order of the day but you would suggest our attacking options are nothing out of the ordinary. I'm referring here to the three behind the striker, whichever combination we choose they are not consistent enough, which is a mental issue and they don't give the impression they are regularly going to rip defences apart.

It's all run of the mill, mundane. You can not judge with heart but have to judge with the head and you have to be brutally honest at time. If you sit around waiting for players to provide the improvement you want when show no inclination to do so, then you have to change what you do to inspire or change the player.

It is not an area we have strength in depth in, we have numbers, but are they good enough numbers. We have no idea how Alex Pritchard is going to get on when he is fit, it is a step up in levels for him, Dele Alli is new, Nabil Bentaleb was playing a different role so it is early days. A loo at the squad however would suggest we need someone in addition to Christian Eriksen who can create.

Reports suggest that Tottenham and Everton are interested in signing wantaway AC Milan midfielder Keisuke Honda. As is now customary with Spurs we first look at his age, 29 (30 next June), with a contract until 2017. He is important to AC Milan from a marketing point of view as they wish to make inroads into the Asian market but he has fallen down the pecking order under their new boss.

It is suggested he is unsettled and as a left-footer playing on the right who carries a goal threat, he scored 1 in every 3 shots on target last season,  we have to be interested. He is plying his trade in a weak Italian league though, Lamela was a huge star in the league but is very ordinary at Premier League level. I'm not suggesting that all players will fail to adapt as Lamela has failed but we have to be careful. Having said that we have looked at plenty of players from Holland and Belgium who are playing at a lower level than the Italians.

It is no surprise we have been looking closely at the Bundesliga for players, both established and future stars. Lamela and Townsend have thus far not provided the goal threat we need from that side so there is certainly a case for selling Townsend and bringing in Honda.
