Corinthians President - Signing Pato was a mistake

Alexandre Pato is the Brazilian striker who banged in the goals when he first arrived at AC Milan as a youngster before injury saw a long road to recover his form. Last season was the first suggestion that he may have found it again with a 21 goal season.

The 25-year-old (26 in September) is under contract to Corinthians until 30 June 2016 so the figure being suggested £8-million (€11m) on paper looks reasonable. He is on loan at Sao Paulo until his contract ends, but a report by Fox Sports Brazil suggest that they can't afford him so won't be able to keep him beyond his loan period.

Corinthians signed Pato from AC Milan in 2013 and now admit that it was a mistake, a gamble that didn't pay off admitted Roberto de Andrade, president of Corinthians, but director of football back in 2013.

"At the time, we thought it was a good deal. We took the money from the sale of Paulinho (approximately 10 million euros for Tottenham) plus the award of FIFA (5 million euros) to sign him. He was a young player who also thought resale. Today we can say it was a bad deal. But we have no crystal ball. Only errs, who tries."

He doesn't figure in Corinthians plans for 2016 campaign, Sao Paulo can't afford him and his value will only go down from this point. It is in their best interests, therefore, to ensure a quick sale before the window shuts and that means being flexible on price, you can smell a bargain in the air. Now these quotes are from June but it is pretty clear Corinthians want shot of him and that puts us in a very good bargaining position.

"There's no mood for it back. We had (player) that wanted to attack him after that missed penalty against Gremio (cost the elimination of Corinthians in 2013 Brazil Cup). He has no personality to wear the Corinthians shirt. And now solves sue the club. I do not like or companions (of the time), or coach, or board "ensures a very influential person in the team that prefers to remain anonymous.
At the same time, entrepreneurs unfold so that Pato is negotiated soon with the outside football. A team of Italy (not first line) have already shown interest in hiring Alexandre Pato. If the proposal is actually consolidated, Corinthians will come across negotiate the attacker immediately. Even for a value less than the 15 million."

The video below shows the Corinthians coach arriving for a game against Santos the week after he had missed a penalty, he was the subject of abuse from the crowd and he has not won them back since.

If you add to that his claim of unpaid image rights and the fact he has asked for his immediate release from Corinthians.

The president counters that claim by saying he sold his image rights to an English company when he was 17. You could look for problems and say this would be a difficult transfer to achieve or you could look at it and say both parties are very keen to find a solution in the next 72 hours. It depends upon what opinion you want to take to which angle on the story you take.

Last season though he appeared to find his scoring touch again so while he has no Premier League experience, he does have international experience and experience of the Italian league when it was stronger than it is now. You can read about his exploits at the link below:
