The word pre-season from Tottenham was that Alli was surprising the more experienced players with his ability and that he would surprise people this season. The aim was to integrate him into the squad and bring him along this season with a view to being a first choice next season. He has taken his chances, as I keep urging players must rather than the nonsense run of games tans cite for failure, so has now earned a call-up to the England Under-21 stage.

His goal at Leicester should have been the winner with 10 minutes to go but we blew it again, that's 5 points dropped in 3 games. On Thursday September 3rd England face USA U-23 side, then a European Championship Under-21 qualifier against Norway on Monday September 7th. Alli joins Eric Dier in the squad, Dier was surprisingly dropped from the squad for the European Championships this summer, perhaps a mistake given England's poor defence.
