Tottenham and Everton tango

Tottenham and Everton seem to be embraced in a tango with partners swapping all the time, Lennon to Everton, Lennon for Mirallas, bid for McCarthy, bid for McCarthy and Mirallas, it's one the press want to run with.

The latest has been a bid in the region of £20 million (US$31.06m - AUS$41.97m - €28.17m) for James McCarthy and Kevin Mirallas, but the reasoning looks suspect. The Daily Express want to claim that as we will only have Kane, Kevin Mirallas is a top priority, a winger as cover for a striker is hardly logical. From what I hear we are not much interested in Mirallas so presumably this is his agent pushing his client with the story.

Mirallas has one year left on his contract and doesn't want to remain at Everton, the option for extra years Toffee fans were shouting about in January is irrelevant until it is invoked, which it appears it isn't going to be. He is therefore not worth any more than the player he was kept out of the team by Aaron Lennon.

Reports suggest we want £7 million (US$10.87m - AUS$14.64m - €9.83m) for Lennon which is probably a bit steep, shave a couple off would be more accurate.

James McCarthy is a 24-year-old (25 in November) Republic of Ireland central midfielder often quoted at silly figures. Transfermarkt have him valued at £11.90 million (US$18.47m - AUS$24.88m - €16.72m), which is admittedly low and show him having a contract until 2018.

He is not at the head of our list of central midfielders as we have seem from our efforts to sign others, Pedro Obiang, Giannelli Imbula, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Morgan Schneiderlin to name four off the top of my head. We have been looking for a player expected to progress into the top bracket, I'm not convinced James McCarthy has that in him, but if he fits the system effectively then he could still be a decent signing.

We can't force players to come to Tottenham so central midfield is an area to watch with interest. We must have reinforcements with Tom Carroll yet to convince and Dele Alli untried at Premier League level.

2015/16 - Bentaleb, Mason, Carroll, Alli, Dembélé, (McCarthy or another)
vs
2014/15 - Bentaleb, Mason, Dembélé, Capoue, Stambouli, Paulinho

You would have to say last years group look stronger on paper, this season's group may be more effective though. We don't know the completed lineup though, Adrien Rabiot could still arrive. It would suggest Mousa Dembélé may be a more important figure this season, he may well be giving the experience to our midfield in the UEFA Europa League alongside Alli.

There is still plenty of time for further targets to come in rather than this Everton pair.
