Spurs eye £4.25m midfielder suited to our system

French newspaper L'Equipe are suggesting that Tottenham are interested in French defensive midfielder Jordan Veretout.

They suggest we are preparing to bid £10.62 million (US$16.47pm - AUS$22.62m - €15m) for the 22-year-old (23 next March). He plays for his local club Nantes, has a contract until 2017, has played 63 Ligue 1 games and over 150 for the club in all. He has scored 8 Ligue 1 goals and made 12 assists.

The Nantes hierarchy think highly of him as chairman Waldemir Kita demonstrated with a recent statement, "the player will stay with the club, but if an offer of €100 M were put on the table, I would think twice."

A throwaway statement but one that demonstrates his value to them and in the January transfer window he was attracting the interest of Arsenal. A bit of research reveals a suggestion that he may have a £4.25 million (US$6.59pm - AUS$9.04m - €6m) buyout clause so a £10.62 million bid wouldn't be needed if that were true.

He has played at youth levels for France, winning the FIFA I-20 World Cup in 2013. Nantes are managed by Michel der Zakarian who plays a high-energy game so he is a player who has experience of our style of play. The use the same 4-2-3-1 we do and last season he was moved from the Ryan Mason role into the central midfield attacking role so clearly he has versatility to his game.

He can tackle, dribble, has pace, defensive know-how, an eye for a pass and time to develop into a better player. Etienne Capoue and Benjamin Stambouli haven't worked at Spurs perhaps we think Jordan Veretout would be third time lucky.
