Fernando Llorente

The latest news from Italy on Fernando Llorente, based on various reports, is that he is, or has been, being chased by French side Monaco, who have offered him a wage increase, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Sevilla, Benfica, Galatasaray, Real Madrid and Porto.

Suffice to say he is popular at the moment. At Juventus Llorente earns 4.5 million EUR per season and Monaco have offered to raise that to 5 million EUR. That equates to £68,462-a-week (US$107,509 - AUS$139,789 - €96,115). The downside is the size of the Stade Louis II stadium that only holds 18,523 people.

Real Madrid have dropped their interest, Galatasaray have signed Lukas Podolski, the Portuguese league would be a step down and he wants to be playing at the top level to try and force his way into the Spanish squad for the UEFA 2016 European Championships in France.

While plenty of clubs have spoken to Llorente and discussed fees with Juventus nobody has, as yet, put in an official bid, that is to say, a bid in writing. That doesn't often happen until a fee has been agreed, most transfer discussions are therefore informal with offers or verbal bids made.

The Liverpool press are running with stories of Liverpool being drawn into a bidding war for the Spaniard but in reality these things rarely exist. A club decides how much it is willing to pay, has a ceiling price and tries to secure the purchase for less, the selling club do the opposite. Clubs ask to be kept informed of the situation but unless a bid is official, which 99% aren't then in theory the selling club doesn't have to reveal amounts from verbal discussions with other clubs.

A club will normally make a bid, discuss and perhaps make a second bid but they don't get involved in auctions because it is the players wishes that matter most. No point buying a player who actually wants to be somewhere else or whose head hasn't bought into what you are trying to do, as we saw with Paulinho, now exposed as only being interested in the money.

While he may have chosen us it isn't yet confirmed that we have chosen him, he is not our first option or second, but that is quite normal for every club. Each club has a series of targets for each position and they work through the list preparing them all. If you can't convince the first to sign or have to wait for an answer while they keep their option open you prepare another.

The preparation work has been done with club and player, we know the type of wages he would want and the fee that Juventus want.
