Can Spurs succeed this season?

The Daily Mirror are suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino has turned his attention to 30-year-old (21 next July) Manchester United winger Ashley Young. His age makes this doubtful but as we will not be signing Yannick Bolasie, who hasn't been a serious target, my initial reaction is it's highly unlikely.

The fact that he is on £100,000-a-week at Old Trafford would mean he would have to take a £40,000-a-week pay cut to join us, however I don't see any other club paying him those kind of wages either, home or abroad.

Stuart Pearce was asked by talkSPORT where he thought Tottenham would finish and his answer tells you everything about football today. He said we would finish where our financial muscle dictates we will finish, between 5th and 7th.

Danny Murphy said the same thing, commenting about the quality of player always being behind the top four, which is all down to what we can afford to pay in wages.

“Tottenham for years now have been fifth and sixth and there or there abouts – In terms of player quality, they are always lacking behind the top four because of finances and they’re trying to get players they can mould and improve."

It is the reality of football now rendering the complaints about not winning trophies pretty meaningless. I looked at the Premier League titles, FA Cup wins and League Cup wins. The Premier League has never been won by a side without money and the two cups have predominantly been won by sides with more money.

Take a look at the trophies won below. Of 60 trophies 51 trophies had been won by sides with more money than us. Only the League Cup offes much hope of winning and we have been in the final 5 times since 1998.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea have won the Premier League every year since 1994/5 (21 seasons) and recently Manchester City as they have come into money.

Wigan (23rd in Championship) and Portsmouth (18th in League Two) are the only clubs outside the five with a higher income thus us to win the FA Cup since 1994/95 (21 seasons), then back to us in 1990/91.

In 18 years of the League Cup since 1998 it has been won by Chelsea 4 times, Liverpool 3 times, Manchester United 3 times (beat us in the 2009 final), Tottenham Hotspur 2 times, Manchester City 1. Outside of those clubs Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers (beat us in the 2002 final), Middlesborough, Birmingham City and Swansea City have won it once.

We have won the trophy 2 times out of the 7 it has not been won by a club with a higher wage bill and on one of those occasions we were in the final so of the 7 finals we have appeared in 3 of them. In that 18 year period 5 finals have not featured a richer club han us and we have appeared in 2 of those 5, winning one, losing one.

1999 Tottenham Hotspur v Leicester City 1-0
2000 Leicester City v Tranmere Rovers 2-1
2003 Tottenham Hotspur v Blackburn Rovers 1-2
2004 Middlesbrough v Bolton Wanderers 2-1
2013 Swansea City v Bradford City 5-0

Those statistics tell us money wins, it's not a competition we can compete in so attempting another route until we can build the financial clout required is to be applauded and should be supported by all. There is nothng wrong with dreams, but you have to devise a trategy to make dreams come true.

if it was just about assembling a football team then trophies would regularly be won by other clubs but as we see they aren't, 2 FA cups in 21 seasons, no Premier League titles. Buying players we can afford to get us into the top four doesn't work, we have shown that, as has every other club, they don't achieve it either remember.

If you accept that is only going to happen occasionally then devising another strategy makes sense. Buying the top players bfore they become top players we can do. We achieve something when we have a top four player in our team, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale. Instead of waiting until one come around we are attempting to create more of them, if successful, in theory, we should ne more successful.
