Building a squad with a bond for the club

In one of my many articles explaining what Spurs needed to be doing and are doing now, I put forward that we need to create a young group of players who have a bond with the club.

Much like Manchester United did with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes etc, Spurs needed to build a squad and a youth conveyor belt that know a set system inside out, that are happy and can grow together. Without the money of others, it is one way to compete and isn't built overnight.

The important element is the  bond with the club, if a player has an attachment to the club then he is less likely to leave, that is only natural, it won't always happen but it is an element being quoted on a regular basis by players now. Harry Kane, Ryan Mason, Nabil Bentaleb have all cited it and now our highly promising and much sought after younster Josh Onomah has done the same.

“I’ve been going to White Hart Lane since I was nine, watching the games, feeling the passion of the fans, it just makes you want to pull the shirt on and be out there.
"Making my debut last season was an amazing feeling, a massive moment for me and I just hope I can experience it more and more.
“Harry, Nabil, Ryan and Andros are inspirational for us. They have all come through the Academy and they have all given us belief, they have shown that it is possible. It’s great to be around them, to ask their advice and learn from them day to day.
“I’d love to follow in their footsteps. I just want to play for Tottenham for many years to come.”

It can't hurt for our players to have those feelings, indeed it will help them to perform better if they do. Performing for their club as well as their teammates, their manager and themselves will help create a positive atmosphere and maximise their growth as players, it will also help them sign a new deal instead of leaving if at all possible.

Players who stay for money are one thing, but players who stay because they want to play for the club are quite another. Youngsters need role models, they need players to follow, they need a light at the end of a tunnel, the like of Harry Kane and Ryan Mason provide that.
