Winger targets

Paul Mitchell and Mauricio Pochettino certainly have a long list of names for the wide attacker positions in the Tottenham squad.

We have scouted a wide range of players for the immediate future and further beyond. What is clear is that we are looking for quality players who are not yet ridiculously expensive, which generally rules out anyone in the Premier League.

The wages in Italy are a lot lower, Napoli, who finished 5th under Rafa Benítez, pay most their squad around £30,000-a-week (US$47,108 - AUS$60,931 - €42,068) and then a player like goalscorer Gonzalo Higuaín £150,000-a-week (US$235,559 - AUS$304,654 - €210,441), it has been reported.

That list is needed because players, incredible as it may sound to some of our fans, have the right to actually choose where to play and which offer suits their ambitions. offer a club more money and a player will magically sign is, not only bad business, but fantasy.

A club like Juventus, for instance, can offer a league title chance, they have won four on the trot, so a player can go to the sunnier climes of Italy, get UEFA Champions League football and win trophies with less competition. Italy has a pull the Premier League doesn't, for some, not for all, they go to Italy to play football, they then come to Egland when they want to earn money for a few years. The number of players who come here and don't push on is huge, the top players on the top wages have an incentive to perform, not only can they win trophies at one of the big four but they get handsomely rewarded for producing the goods.

This morning Le10 Sport reported Tottenham had made an official offer for 21-year-old (22 in September) Belgian winger Yannick Ferreira Carrasco. This was subsequently confirmed by French Football News who put guestimated prices to the story. They claim Tottenham offered £9.98 million (US$15.68m - AUS$20.24m - €14m) but that Monaco are looking more for £17.83 million (US$28.01m - AUS$36.16m - €25m).

Another Tottenham wide attacker target is 22-year-old (23 in January) French youth international Florian Thauvin, we had a bid in January turned down for him and have also had previous bids rejected for 23-year-old (24 in October) Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri. he is also back on the market with Inter Milan deciding they no longer want him just 6 months after signing him from Bayern Munich.

Liverpool once again are hot on his trail, £10.70 million (US$16.79m - AUS$21.69m - €15m) the Italians paid for him and are looking to recoup. Then there is Chelsea winger Mohamad Salah, the 23-year-old (24 in June) Egyptian international is reported in the Italian press as having decided to join Inter Milan, whether a fee can be agreed with the inflated valuation Chelsea have placed upon him is another matter.

The transfer window opens on 1 July but with the Premier League starting early this year (8th August), because of the European Championships in France next summer, transfer business is being conducted earlier than usual. It makes for, what will seem like, a very long transfer window.

The wide attackers we are mainly linked with it seems are all expected to be top class or very highly rated and the like. It's encouraging that in such an essential position in our squad we want to add quality, but let's see who we actually sign at the end of the day. Any deal needs to be, from Spurs point of view, for what the player is worth, not what he may become. The selling club naturally wants the fee based on potential rather than performance.

If the figure has too much potential value build in and a reduction can't be negotiated you move on to another target, there are plenty of players out there. initial offers are merely a starting position to begin negotiations. Will Carrasco be our main target? We have submitted a formal bid instead of the informal bids that form part of a transfer negotiation. You always have to laugh when you hear a club say they have received no official or formal bids, doesn't mean for one minute that clubs have made unofficial offers during negotiations.
