Spurs scout winger Julian Green again
2 min read
A player Tottenham have tracked for well over a year is Bayern Munich winger Julian Green. He is a player we are clearly very interested in.
A Spurs scout was at the USA vs Qatar Under-20 game at the Toulo tournament in France. Green was playing for the United States who he switched from after playing youth football with Germany up to Under-19 level. Green scored with a volley in the game.
He has been frustrated at Bayern Munich and doesn't look likely to get game time any time soon. He was loaned out to Hamburg and then the coach, Mirko Slomka, left after he had been there for one game. The new coach, Josef Zinnbauer, didn't play him and tried to loan him out to second division side 1860 Munich, who play at Bayern Munich's ground.
Green refused to move and the Hamburg sporting director, Peter Knabel, demoted Green to the reserve side in February, they play in the fourth tier and Green refused to play for them also.
It sounds like he is a problem 19-year-old but you get the impression that he is a talented lad who needs first team football in the Bundesliga. It's no different to us loaning Alex Pritchard to Bournemouth say, now they are promoted and Bournemouth playing him in the reserves. It wouldn't be any good for Pritchard at all and you feel Green was in that position.
Bayern Munich executive board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge feels he has the quality but will need another season on loan, possibly in England.
His career has stalled with a wasted year at Hamburg but he is clearly one we want, we have tried to sign him before, last summer we said to have bid £5 million (US$7.64m - AUS$10.02m - €6.87m) for him.

"I needed to defend myself and a few days later sporting director Knabel apologised to me."

"If, at the end, he comes back -- and it looks like he will come back -- at the end of the season, then we have to sit together and find the best solution for him.
"I don't believe the first step will be here at Bayern. Probably, he will need one more year in a club wherever -- in Germany, in England, I don't know -- to show his quality because I believe he does have the quality."
