Spurs interested in 4 Marseilles players

Tottenham Hotspur have been sending scouts to French side Marseilles during last season to watch 4 players.

We made a move for one in January, are trying to sign a second, will go back for the January enquiry, have asked about a replacement for Stambouli and retain an interest in a striker. In May we sent a scout to watch the Marseilles vs Monaco game as we are interested in players from both vlubs.

The players in question are Florian Thauvin (tried to sign him in January), André Ayew (available for free), Giannelli Imbula and goalscorer André-Pierre Gignac.

Marseilles play a similar system to us, Mauricio Pochettino is a disciple of Maecelo Bielsa, the Marseilles boss appointed last summer. Their players will be well versed in our system so adjustment time should be minimal and may help them adapt to the demands of Premier League football quicker.

Financial constraints mean Marseilles have a wage cap and have to sell players to help balance the books, thus they want to improve a player and sell them on so give opportunities to youth.

Giannelli Imbula is a 22-year-old in the mould of Claude Makélélé, a physically strong defensively minded defensive midfielder. He is left footed and is wanted by Chelsea, who tried to sign him before he joined Marseilles in 2013 also.

Florian Thauvin is a 22-year-old French youth international wide player. As is the case with Imbula he is again wanted by Chelsea and also Valencia. He can play anywhere across the attacking three behind the striker and it was revealed we had a bid for him turned down in January. He scored 5 French league goals with 7 assists. He is left footed, has been playing on the right wing and has a contract until 2018. The rumours are that he is staying with Marseilles next season.

André Ayew is another wide attacker and is out of contract on June 30th. We have been in deep discussion with his representatives for months and with Roma not willing to match his wage demands we have emerged as strong favourites for his signature, despite quotes saying he wants Champions League football. He is left footed and plays on the left wing scoring 10 league goals with 6 assists.

André-Pierre Gignac is a 29-year-old striker also out of contract at Marseilles on June 30th, he is interesting WBA and West Ham United, Galatasaray, Lazio and clubs throughout Europe. He is a right footed central striker who scored 21 goals and had 2 assists in the league last season.

One club, 4 players, 1 possibly the other way, 3 sets of agents. Reports earlier in the year I seem to remember were talking about Ayew wanting around £70,000-a-week which I can't see us paying and Gignac is leaving as he falls outside the Marseilles wage cap as well. There has to be question marks over one or both of these arriving despite the 'will sign in days' headlines recently.
