Only one destination for Charlie Austin

Reports are circling that Southampton are winning the race to sign Charlie Austin, a race Newcastle United are in but Tottenham Hotspur are not in.

He wouldn't be a good buy for Tottenham, first because he isn't the type of striker we need and secondly because at his age you would have wanted him to have had more years at the top of the game, instead of only just having got there. It is not about what he has done but how many years he has left that counts.

Austin wants to join Southampton as he wishes to play regular football, like Danny Ings, the money is secondary. Harry Kane is the number one at Spurs so he would be confined to the UEFA Europa League games and having just got to the Premier League it wouldn't be in his best interests to sit on a bench. He wants to play for the best of the rest and that currently is Southampton, having has two good seasons now.

Southampton seem to have taken over the Everton mantle and are punching above their financial weight thanks to excellent transfer business and an ability to get clubs to pay more than their payers are worth.

"I'll speak to (manager) Chris Ramsey and (director of football) Les Ferdinand and tell them my thoughts and they'll tell me their thoughts. After these two weeks, I'll sit down with the club, but I just want to be fully focused on these next two weeks with England."
Austin wants Southampton, if Southampton want him and they appear to, then that will be his destination unless the transfer fee is a problem or the wages are a problem, which is unlikely. It makes sense for his career to play football each week for the best side he will get a regular start in and that is Southampton.
