Konoplyanka and Alderweireld Updates

The latest news of Ukrainian Yevhen Konoplyanka is that he is returning to London later this week to talk to Tottenham.

This follows on from the original Eurosport Turkey story saying he was signing for Tottenham. These flames were fueled by a 'fixer' on Twitter, . A use the term fixer as someone who brings parties together to finalise a deal. He isn't Konoplyanka's agent, that is his father but his individual has been tweeting big news for Tottenham this week, although he isn't naming names.

Stories then emerged from the Turkish press and Ukraine, as well as the recent picture of Konoplyanka at Madrid Airport, having flown there to sign for La Liga side Atlético Madrid. As I understand it Yevhen Konoplyanka doesn't decide where he plays football, his father does.

The very latest stories now are that he is returning to London later this week to talk and sign for Tottenham. This is one individual where decisions are changed from minute to minute it seems. Liverpool thought they had signed him and that fell through, it seems, unfortunately, to be all about money.

I have no problem with a player securing the best deal for himself as long as he then has the right mental attitude to produces the goods consistently and do everything in his power to make that happen. If that is Yevhen Konoplyanka excellent, if not, well we don't want another Paulinho.

Tomorrow is the 1st July when the transfer window opens, existing contracts finish on 30th June. Toby Alderweireld is still officially on loan at Southampton until tomorrow, then he is back with Atlético Madrid. There have been many reports that Alderweireld has told Atlético that he wants to join Tottenham, but then there are reports he has said he wants to join Southampton. There are reports that he has told friends he is going to join Spurs with that personal terms have all been agreed. Then there is the word coming out of the club that we are not signing him.

There is also a line of 'ITK' that suggests we have little interest in Konoplyanka, that the off-field issues are far too difficult to resolve. I guess we will know in a couple of days. The impression I have is that Alderweireld is going to Southampton and that Konoplyanka will end up at Spurs. That is just my interpretation of what I have heard though.

This is a very cloudy issue, both are and either could be going either way when it is decision time and the day for putting pen to paper arrives.

This is a window unlike any other recently with the European Championships in France next summer. The fixtures in Europe are starting earlier than usual, 8th August in the Premier League. That has meant to have players training with the squad they need to be signed early in the window, thus there has been frantic activity from everyone to get deals in place by 1 July, far far more than normal. It is a players market at the moment, they know clubs want signings early and can press for very favourable deals.

That has all been compounded with the amount of international competition taking place this summer meaning some players are going to need a rest before they begin pre-season training, Harry Kane being just one. Clubs have to have new signings bedded into the squad as much as they can to cover for that period.

The football world can expect a busy day tomorrow.
