Agent Mendes flies to London to sell Benfica pair

Tottenham want to do deals early to give Mauricio Pochettino every chance to put across his style of play to our new recruits.
Kevin Mimmer, whom German club FC Koln confirm is leaving but are contractual obliged not to say where, despite Wimmer himself telling German paper Bild he is joining Tottenham, is the first through the door.
There is the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship this summer so any player involved in the 20th staging of the tournament, this time in the Czech Republic from 15 to 30 June, will need to be signed before or after. If a player is to be signed before then there is little time and negotiations will need to be virtually completed before the transfer window officially opens. In the England squad is Danny Ings, heavily linked with Spurs in January for an end of season move, which to me looks unlikely.
In South America there is the 2015 Copa America taking place in Chile. The 44th staging of the tournament takes place between June 11th and July 4th so once again signing early or late will have to take place again.
Players involved in both tournaments will need a break after the tournaments have finished so that would disrupt the first 7 weeks of pre-season training that Pochettino is keen to have all his players at.
The South American market is one we have been scouring for a number of years, there are arguably more bargains there than in Europe, if you are concentrating on young players. Upbringing may have something to do with that, there are many areas of poverty and football is a way out of that, not only for the player but for his family. That creates players with a winning mentality, a desire to improve all the time, to take their chance and not to return to the poverty they came from.
Are South American players more driven to achieve as a result? That's another subject but Tottenham are keen to unearth some future talent.
Benfica president, Luis Felipe Vieira, has asked agent Jorge Mendes to sell 27-year-old Argentinian midfielder Nicolás Gaitán and 24-year-old Argentinian right winger Eduardo Salvio, according to Portuguese newspapers A Bola and O Jogo.
The newspapers claim that Tottenham are seriously interested in Salvio but so are Liverpool who have been heavily inked with signing him, which looks far more likely. He is valued at £17.16 million (€24.14 million) by transfermarkt but Benfica may well be looking for much more than that with his contract ending in 2017, which raises the question, are we really interested. I suspect not despite 13 goals and 11 assists in 37 games.
Nicolás Gaitán has a contract until 2018 and is regularly talked amount as a £30 million+ (€42.20 million) player, his transfermarkt valuation id £22.88 million (€32.18 million). You would think one of the top four would be of more interest to him with Champions League football next season.
Despite the link neither look likely, we are more interested in developing the next generation of talent from South America than signing players who are not going to increase in value. Like it or not that's the policy we have to pursue.
