Spurs scouting 21-year-old German Johannes Geis

Tottenham scouts have been keeping a very close watch on 21-year-old German defensive midfielder Johannes Geis.

He is a player that interests Manchester United and is currently playing Bundesliga football for FC Mainz for whom he has a contract until 2017. It is a position Tottenham have struggled with and the purchase of Benjamin Stambouli during the summer has not eased the situation.

Etienne Capoue is one of the ego three, Emmanuel Adebayor, Younes Kaboul and Capoue involved in the November Harry Kane argument that has since seen al of them become bit part players when others have needed a rest. Captain Younes Kaboul has long since been quiet when your captain is usually the one who consistently gives views to the press.

Capoue will be offloaded in the summer, Stambouli has been ordinary and Paulinho a flop who prefers to pass backwards than forwards. that has left us with Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb tp play the position almost permanently. Whether Stambouli has a future or whether he will be moved on we'll have to wait and see but clearly it's an area we need new recruits and Geis is being assessed as an option.

Mainz have deployed various system over the last couple of season and Gies has shown his versatility to adapt to them in his defensive central midfield role, those systems have included the 4-2-3-1 operated by Mauricio Pochettino. A requirement for Argentinian head coach is that his defensive midfielders must be able to pass forward quickly when the opportunity presents itself, so a range of short and long passes are needed. Capoue has struggled with that aspect, not releasing the ball quick enough.

Geis has demonstrated the ability to do so and he is also an excellent crosser of the ball. In 2014 of all the players who attempted more than 50 crosses in the top five leagues in Europe Geis had the highest accuracy, 43.8%.

The video below demonstrates the vital aspect of play for a player that makes the difference, vision. Any player with vision seems to have more time on the ball and can spot a pass because he always knows where his team mates are. Most players get the ball, then have to look, then decide what to do, the play the pass. If you can reduce the time it takes you to spot the pass you raise above the mediocrity of the norm, that is achieved by simply looking around constantly. Stupidly simply but a skill that many a player simply doesn't develop.
