VINE - Yedlin has a hand in US goal

VINE - Yedlin has a hand in US goal

He spent New Year Eve with Harry Kane and had his first training session with Tottenham on January 7th. He has interrupted his training to join the USA squad, who faced Chile on Wednesday.  Stateside the USA side are known as the USMNT (US Mens National Team) but to the rest of us it's plain old USA. They are managed by former Tottenham hero Jürgen Klinsmann and lined up in a 3-4-1-2 formation for the game with Yedlin as the right wing-back and another ex Tottenham player, Clint Dempsey, behind the front two.

At half-time the US were 2-1 up with goals from Brek Shea after 6 minutes, cancelled out by Roberto Gutierrez after 10 minutes before former Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore, recently moved to Toronto in a swap deal for Spurs old boy Jermain Defoe, put them ahead again after 30 minutes. Yedlin (number 2) doing good work in attack had a hand in the second goal.

The home side had more of the possession in the first half, 54% but it was the USA who had more shots on target 3 out of 7 goal attempts, while Chile has had 2 out of 11 attempts on target. While Cile had more corners in this first period 6-1, were offside more often 4-1, had more throw-ins 12-4, each keeper only had to make one save.

Yedlin did well in the first-half, had a shot wide in the second but was making a few mistakes, one could have led to a goal and fr the equaliser after 66 minutes he was ball watching. He has been up and down the flank all night so will do his fitness a power of good. The game finished 3-2 to Chile but Yedlin got 90 minutes under his belt.

Earlier in the week Yedlin spoke with US Soccer about his beginnings at Tottenham

“I think at the time with Spurs I’m obviously just training and not getting a ton of games because I still need to get my fitness up. But I think it allowed me to get time with the national team, which is always good, and hopefully get some games in.
"Game fitness is obviously the most important thing, so I think they [Spurs] saw a positive in it, I saw positive in it, and this will work out for everyone. It’s really just right now working on getting that preseason rust off, then hopefully getting into form where I can play.”

Mauricio Pochetino will have to pick his games carefully and start perhaps by giving Yedlin some cameos in the Premier League or UEFA Europa League ties when the opportunity presents itself. Reports suggest he needs to work on his defending so it will no doubt be winning games that he is brought on for a taster and he'll get Under 21 games to bring his match fitness along.

Thus far he has played 69 minutes of a Barclays U21 Premier League game against West Ham United on January 9th, two days after his first training session. He started the game at right-back, a game we won away from home at Rush Green Stadium 3-1, before being substituted in the second half.

When he departed the score was 2-1 at the time after goals from former Chicago Fire loanee, Grant Ward, and England U19 player Harry Winks, Ward later added his second and Spurs third.
