Tottenham still chasing starlet with world class potential

It's quite comical when you sit back and watch everyone else scramble and jump on any news story as if it must be gospel and our striker targets are a prime example.

Some fans even ask why we are chasing 17-year-old youngsters when we need a striker now, oblivious of the future, oblivious that you have to try and sign players so they can have a three year qualifying period to make them count as home-grown, oblivious that it could save £30 or £40 million.

I reported in the summer our interest in a 17-year-old Argentinian and reminded readers again twice in December when other sites were saying he had agreed a deal with Italian side Roma. The striker in question is from Pochettino's old club, Newell's Old Boys and his name is Ezequiel Ponce.

The stories suggesting he had agreed a deal with Roma seemed to me to be premature, so I didn't jump on the bandwagon, now it seems I was right not to do so. They grew out of the fact his club felt Roma's offer of a 12 month loan back period was better than our 6 month offer. There are third party ownership issues which make it easier for Roma to sign him than ourselves but Tottenham are not giving up.

The latest stories now contradict previous stories and suggest Ponce will make a decision on his future destination this week. Tottenham are extremely keen to sign him, seeing him as ideal for the Premier League and with the potential to join the list of world class Argentinian strikers.

I don't have a crystal ball, I can't tell you what Ezequieil Ponce and his advisers will decide to do, we can only hope and keep our fingers crossed.
