Paulinho to Juventus, ask for Morata

Tottenham Hotspur and Italian champions Juventus are locked in transfer talks over Brazilian Paulinho who hasn't set the world alight in London.

Paulinho to Juventus, ask for Morata

Talks were held between the two clubs yesterday over a permanent transfer, rather than the loan moves suggested by Napoli, Inter and AC Milan. Inter did make a permanent offer but it was only £9.41 million ($14.20m - €12m). That was dismissed as being too low.

A loan deal has few benefits for Tottenham as he'd return to the wage bill in the summer and the club would have to try and sell again. Juventus therefore are the preferred destination.

Officials of both sides met in Milan are are set to meet tomorrow again with the likely sticking pint being the fee. As you all know we paid £17 million ($25.64m - €21.69m) for Paulinho, as part of the 'Summer Seven' in 2013 but he isn't worth that figure now. Naturally Spurs will want to recoup as much of that fee as we can, previous reports have suggested £12 million ($18.21m - €15.46m), Spurs will of course be looking to push that figure as close to £15 million ($22.76m - €19.32m) as we can.

The wage bill has Tottenham has shot up over the past couple of seasons with no improvement in performance, it needs to be brought back under control with some of the high earners, like Emmanuel Adebayor and Paulinho, taken off it. Paulinho collects £70,000 ($105,589.40 - €89,293.89) a week with very little to show for it, certainly Spurs are not getting a return on their investment.

We have just seen a swap deal at Sunderland with Toronto FC for Jermain Defoe and Tottenham officials will no doubt be discussing players they may want as part of the deal. Sebastian Giovinco has been linked but he is a free transfer in the summer so perhaps Spurs officials have asked about the availability of former target Alvaro Morata.

The ex Real Madrid striker has only played 410 minutes of Serie A football, which equates to 4 games and 50 minutes, despite making 13 appearances. In that time he has scored 4 goals and has 1 assist to his name. Such a deal would be unlikely but if you are in discussions you have to ask, especially as reports suggest Juventus want to sign Mario Balotelli.
