Impatience works to our advantage

It's been a regular transfer speculation story for the last couple of seasons. French Under 21 central midfielder, Adrien Rabiot, has been bitterly disappointed with his game time at PSG.

Impatience works to our advantage

This season he has played just 100 minutes in Lique 1 and 74 minutes in the UEFA Champions League but since he told the club he wouldn't sign a new contract, coach Laurent Blanc said he would leave him to rot in the reserves. For the first 15 games this season he wasn't even in the match day squad. He has then been given a 74 minute starting appearance and a 26 minute substitutes appearance. In the last game he was an unused substitute and started against Ajax.

Last season in the league he started 12 games and was brought on as a sub in 13 games, playing for 1,187 minutes. A breakdown of his season sees plenty of small substitute appearances that are not much use to him, an appearance under 20 minutes is a token gesture to try and keep a player happy without it affecting the result of the game generally.

His season went thus; sub (10), not in squad, sub (8), sub (26), sub (18), unused sub, sub (26), full game, sub (58), full game, sub (14), full game, full game, 72 minutes, sub (11), 68 minutes, injury, sub (15), sub (14), 81 minutes, 3 game injury, unused sub, sub (25), sub (1), unused sub, 65 minutes, not in squad for 3 games, full game, sub (10), 58 minutes, not in squad, unused sub, 71 minutes, full game.

It has been a game of cat and mouse with his mother, Rabiot's agent. She had demanded more money, PSG said they wouldn't pay it, transfer rumours start, murmurings that he wouldn't sign a new contract, still no change from PSG, announcement that he wouldn't sign a new contract, exiled by Laurent Blanc. That obviously worked because he has now signed a contract extension until 2019 and he is suddenly back involved with the match day squad.

AS Roma thought they had agreed a deal with him before he signed the extension, now there are rumours of a contract agreement with Tottenham surfacing from a newspaper in Italy. Il Tempo suggest Franco Baldini has agreed a deal for us that all parties are happy with beating Roma, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal amongst others to his signature.

It is important to remember he is only 19 but abroad players start playing younger than they do in England thus are more the finished article than their counter-parts in this country at the same age. Rabiot however is having his development hindered by being at a moneybags club who simply buy the finished article to play in his position. As with all young players he wants to play now and feels he'll get a better chance at Tottenham with our emphasis on youth.
