Eriksen needs to up his game after turning down £60K

Ahead of the game again, I have been raising questions over the performances of Christian Eriksen who like Vertonghen has turned down a new contract.

Eriksen needs to up his game after turning down £60K

A world class player will produce five out of six quality performances but Eriksen produces just one in four and has several flaws in his game. When at Ajax all the top clubs looked at him and all rejected him. There were lingering doubts about him but Tottenham took a chance and paid £11.88 million.

He hasn't proved to be the player we had hoped for regularly enough and now generally stays behind the ball, rather than running ahead of it into the box. That's fine if he then creates chances for others but he doesn't. Spurs had just three shots on target and one of those was from a free-kick.

One incident showed the good and bad of Eriksen. A fantastic piece of skill to beat a man on the byline but then a total lack of composure when it came to the important bit in front of goal. He could have looked for a team-mate, shot at the far post but chose the near and made a complete mess of it. Palace players then showed skill every bit Eriksen's equal at the other end, twice.

There are players aplenty who can produce what he is currently producing and for where we want to be that is not good enough. Players of his ilk have to step up, just as his national coach demanded after poor international performances this season. He is an experienced player Danish manager Morten Olsen pointed out and he has gone backwards at Spurs he remarked. Eriksen accepted the criticism and responded in the next game. We need to see a response at Tottenham, at the moment all we get is talk.

The news that Eriksen has turned down a £60,000 a week contract extension is no surprise with PSG coach Laurent Blanc believing he may suit their system better than ours.

"Ajax have always had players I've liked enormously, some of whom have left.
"One of those is Eriksen, who now plays for Tottenham."

It is believed Eriksen's agent, Martin Schoots, has told Tottenham that he won't discuss contract until the end of the season. Clearly he wants to see where Spurs are going before he commits his client any longer and Spurs want to tie him to a long contract to maximise his transfer value.

His current contract runs until 2018 so it isn't an immediate problem if we feel we can develop his potential, he is still young after all. Pochettino doesn't seem to know where to play him, his defensive work is generally weak when played wide, but his central play isn't consistently good enough. Is that down to him or down to a lack of runners from midfield?

The interchanging front four don't seem to know how to interchange which rather negates the whole system we are playing. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he became a little frustrated at Tottenham. The remainder of this season is a big wait and see period for many of the players.
