Vertonghen's incredible excuse

Spurs fifth choice captain, Jan Vertonghen, sums up the problem at Tottenham pretty well, unfortunately he doesn't mean to.

Vertonghen's incredible excuse

He admits the fans are right to criticise them and that we are right to demand more than we are getting.

"They have the right to expect things from us as players. We want to do well and they expect us to do well – they have expectations like we do and of course they have to express it in some way.
"I understand they were not happy with a defeat at home to Newcastle. Nor are we. We are doing well in the cups, but we need a run of a couple of good games in the league.
"People thought we had started that when we drew against Arsenal and beat Southampton."

All that is fair enough, yes we fans do have expectations, expectations the performances of the club and players over the last few years have raised with constant challenges for a Champions League place. That sets a bar and at the moment we are nowhere near that bar.

A Chelsea fan warned me when Andre Villas-Boas was appointed that he would ruin Tottenham and that have come to pass, with his seven summer signings largely failing. We now have the effects of that ans are having ti deal with the fallout of his reign. It will take time to sort out the mess and it will be a painful time while we do so.

As far as I am aware every club in the Premier League has the same international break so to use it as an excuse for failing to continue a level of performance is rather weak.

"Maybe we were unlucky that the international break came in between, but hopefully we can get back on track now.
“It is difficult to say what is missing. I don't talk about being unlucky, but we had a good first half against Newcastle last weekend, and we were the better team.”

It's that final sentence though that is quite incredible. This is the man who as Newcastle kicked off in the second half was having a cosy little chat with Danny Rose and was startled the game had started.

Unprepared, mentally weak, this a player who gave up last season, clearly none of these things he sees as a problem, which in itself is a massive problem. How the hell is a team meeting with fellow players who also are blind to the obvious going to solve the problem they can't even see exists?

Liverpool and WBA could have been ahead inside 2 minutes at White Hart Lane because they are ready for a start of a game and we are not even mentally tuned into the game yet. Our players go onto the field and then start mentally preparing, it's too late by then.

It is difficult to say what is missing, no it isn't, it's very easy.
