Southampton irrelevant and Rose mentally changed

Mousa Dembele has echoed the thoughts of my match preview that for Tottenham the fact that Southampton are the head coach's old club is largely irrelevant.

Southampton irrelevant and Rose mentally changed

It will have more significance to Southampton than it will to us. How much affect these things have on players is debatable as it doesn't affect them personally so doesn't motivate them individually.

"Things like Mauricio coming up against his old club don't make a difference, we want to beat every team. In every game there is something special for someone but for the team and the club, we have to win every match.
"It was a good performance at Arsenal but this is a different game. Southampton will do everything to beat us at our place but we know this and we've got a good team who will do anything to win."

Southampton irrelevant and Rose mentally changedOnly a player can determine what he considers to be a big game and give that little something extra that makes a difference to his performance. They should see every game as a big game and until they do they will never play at their optimum. Certain players this season have stepped up to the plate and have mentally changed, turned a corner as it were, Danny Rose being a prime example.

During the summer Mauricio Pochetino told him 4 times he could play for England as a left-back and the confidence and belief that has given Rose has seen him take every game and every training session as important. The result is better performances, so much so that it is going to be difficult for Ben Davies to force his way into the team.

Davies has now got to step up his game, which is looking shaky at the moment. Danny Rose has improved because of a simple change in mental attitude, he isn't doing anything different, he is just doing it better, concentrating harder, pushing himself harder to improve. He has a drive that he didn't have before.

A few more players need to step up to the plate now.
