Redknapp is right of course

Harry Redknapp believes the the Financial Fair Play rules are not fair play at all and he is of course quite right.

Redknapp is right of course

The theory of Financial Fair Play is that clubs don't go into huge debt and put themselves in danger chasing success. It was of course sold as a way to even things up, but of course that is never the intention of UEFA.

UEFA have to pander to the top clubs, it's the only way to keep them on board. The UEFA Champions League was created to prevent a breakaway league. It was designed with the sole intention of guaranteeing them as much European football against each other as possible while in theory having an open competition. The big clubs wanted to guarantee the TV money and revenue these games bring in rather than playing a perceived small team.

For those that failed to get through easy groups a second chance was created, an elongated UEFA Europa League that rewards failure, but does guarantee further European football and thus extra revenue.

The Financial Fair Play rules are along the same ideas, you have to live within your means and your income determines what you can spend. The clubs with the most money coming in, the Champions League clubs have the most income. They can therefore spend more money and pay more wages than anyone else, thus getting the best players to help retain their position as a top earning club.

Many will moan Redknapp is opening his mouth again but these people simply love to hold grudges, if you listen to what he says he is spot on, not that I'm complaining with the way things are, they suit us quite nicely thanks to Daniel Levy building us to this position.

If he hadn't and hadn't built the clubs commercial income we'd be one of the 13 in the Premier League who fight out the relegation places. We can't spend the amounts the big boys do with over£100 million less income, or pay the wages they do. We can though do better than the rest and try to find the right combination to help us break into the top four on a regular basis.

“To make it 'fair play' we should be able to spend as much as Man United have spent before we play them on Sunday, surely?”
“One team can spend £100m and another can only spend £8-10m. That’s not fair play is it?
“It would be fair if each team can spend £30m a season and bring through youngsters.
“We have seven teams on a different planet to us. The top seven will almost certainly be the top seven again, it could get boring.”

Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, leagues are all moving towards small numbers having a chance to win a domestic league, this year the Premier League is basically a two horse race between Chelsea and Manchester City with the rest fighting out for third and fourth.
