Surprised if Obika is loaned out

As has been reported recently Doncaster Rovers are interested in taking Jonathan Obika on loan next season.

Jonathan Obika

Paul Dickov explains he is an admirer of a player he has watched a lot.

“Jonathan’s a player I’ve admired for a long time. I’ve watched him since he was 16-year-old at Tottenham and he’s a player I know a lot about.

“There have been preliminary discussions, but that’s about as far as it’s gone at the moment.”

Barnsley, Bristol City and Charlton Athletic have also expressed their interest.

With clubs interested in him many fans may be expecting his departure soon but I would be surprised until our situation is a little clearer.

Nigerian Obika will be 24 in September and signed a new one year contract before the summer transfer window opened. He is home grown qualified, meaning he spent 3 years registered with the FA prior to his 21st birthday.

Spurs always have one of these type of players now, previously it was Simon Dawkins, a player many couldn't figure out why he was on the books. Both were and are home grown and thus Obika is a fall back position if needed that allows Spurs to sell other home grown players like Dawson, Livermore and Sigurdsson.

You can only name 17 non home grown players in your 25 man Premier League Squad, thus we can name Obika if we need to. Once we have named him then he can go out on loan, there is a loan window to the Championship after the transfer window.

Thus until our home grown player situation is clear Obika I expect will stay and be loaned out later, but I simply don't see it happening now.
