Shock Horror, Sandro to Italy

Surprise surprise, after the Italian press said Cambiasso is edging closer to Tottenham yesterday I said they will assume Sandro is closer to going to Italy. Today therefore we have Sandro news from Italy. Who could predict it!

Shock Horror, Sandro to Italy

Sky Sports Italian football expert Gianluca Di Marzio reveal that Napoli will try to sign Sandro.

“Napoli are looking for a new midfielder this summer. After the deal with Gonalons rejected, the Neapolitans have shifted their attention to Sandro, Brazilian midfielder from Tottenham.

"The English club are asking for £19.93 million (€25m), a price tag considered too high by De Laurentiis. The feeling is that the deal could be closed with £
14.35 million (€18m) plus bonuses. Sandro moving to Napoli is more than an idea. Napoli will make an attempt to sign him.”

I think Spurs fans have now come to realise that Sandro wants to leave White Hart Lane and the Italian press haven't stopped throwing midfield names at the story.

Prior to last season Sandro was among the top defensive midfielders in Europe and the Italians seem to think he should now be cheap as a result of a poor season.

Sandro revealed his desire to leave when Tim Sherwood was in charge and was left out of the side because he was playing badly to put it mildly. He was one of a few players who thought a few games of effort at the end of the season would get them in a World Cup squad.

When their was speculation from Italy and stories of £12 million (€15.05m) offers I wrote he was a £20 million (€25.09m) footballer so it's refreshing the club view him in the same light.

Sandro indicated his desire to leave back in May, an idea dismissed by many Spurs fans at the time.

"It would be very difficult to leave on loan from here [Tottenham].

“If I was to leave, it would have to be permanently and it is not close. Other teams have come, however, with little money. President (Daniel Levy) negotiates every transfer, this was the case for [Gareth] Bale had the case, it is not easy.”

His agent, Luiz Paulo Chignall invited offers from Italy telling the Italian media everyone wants to play there.

"We have not had direct contact. We know that many clubs are following Sandro, because he has features rare to find on the market, he is a modern player. There is no official offer at the moment.

"All the players would like to play in Serie A, the league is very important. Now we have to wait for the opening of the summer market and then we'll know if he can leave Tottenham or not.

"Sandro at the beginning of the year came back well from injury, he'd like to stay in London and has a great relationship with the fans, who consider him an idol. Tottenham want to keep him, but we can not exclude that a club makes a good offer and the club decides to sell him."

Clearly he has been and is touting his player around Italian clubs. Inter, Roma and Napoli have all been linked, all hoping for a bargain, the same way we do when buying players.

Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis played down his clubs interest in Sandro at the end of May.

"Sandro? He is a player that we follow. But we follow a lot of players."

At the beginning of June Napoli offered £8.12 million (€10m) which was turned down, now it seems they'll be happy to eventually pay double that. The window in the major European leagues opened on July 1st so transfer activity will only grow over the next two months.

I doubt we'll be seeing Sandro in a Spurs shirt next season.
