Spurs seek quick deal for Mexican centre-back Moreno

Tottenham are to raid Pochettino's former club Espanyol for Mexican centre-back Héctor Moreno.

Spurs seek quick deal for Mexican centre-back Moreno

Barcelona-based Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo report that Mauricio Pochettino and Technical Director Franco Baldini met at an Argentinian restaurant in Barcelona for an update on transfer targets.

Centre-back has been identified as a priority, possibly even two centre-backs with question marks against Michael Dawson, Vlad Chiriches and Younes Kaboul.

Moreno has told Espanyol he wants to leave as his agent, Eduardo Hérnandez, confirmed recently.

"Moreno is leaving Espanyol. He wants to leave and we're looking for another team in Europe."

Interested parties include Southampton, Everton, AC Milan, Inter and Manchester United. Moreno played under Louis Van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar but the new United boss wants Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal for £12 million and it seems the Arsenal man wants to move to Old Trafford.

Earlier in the season Moreno has expressed his desire to play in Europe and hinted that if Espanyol were not going to achieve it then he would have to move..

"It may be at the end of season or in two years, when my contract ends. When I came to Espanyol three years ago I knew that the main objective was safety and then fighting for Europe, but in three years there has been little improvement.

"My desire is to reach Europe with this club, but I do not know if I can get there in the end. Here I learned a lot and I've grown as a player."

The 26 year-old was excellent against Brazil on Tuesday night. Tottenham want to act quickly before not only his price goes up from it's current £8 million level but his wages go up too.

Pochettino was both a player, played more games for them than any other foreign player, and manager of Barcelona-based Espanyol and brought Moreno to the club. He knows him well and that link may help Spurs secure the Mexican's signature.

Moreno himself has left his future totally in the hands of his representatives, not uncommon, while he concentrates on the World Cup.

He has a wealth of experience to draw upon even at the tender age of 26, he has 7 years of European football, 56 international caps, has played at 2 World Cups, the Confederations Cup, Under 20 World Cup and Under 17 World Cup.

He is showing once again on the world's largest stage excellent positional awareness, he always seems to be in the right place at the right time. That is not luck it's down to an ability to read the game well, to anticipate rather than react, although he can react when he needs to, indeed his quick thinking gives him recovery pace.

Pochettino wants his defenders to stay on their feet and retain the dominant defensive position, jockeying and forcing the opposing player into a mistake. Moreno knows his system and was Player of the Year at Espanyol when brought from Holland.

The 6ft (1.84m) defender is just the sort of signing we need but normally plays left-sided centre-back, although he can play right-sided also.

Both Baldini and Pochettino being in Barcelona will give them in the chance to visit Espanyol, for Pochettino to see old friends and Baldini to try and conclude a deal quickly.
