Readers have known for a while that Brad Friedel would be signing a new contract and that has now been officially announced by the club.
At the moment Brad Friedel is taking his UEFA coaching badge while at Tottenham and wanted to remain at the club while he did so. The mentality within the Tottenham squad was not the best last season and Friedel has been a shining example to others.
It must be something about keepers because Hugo Lloris put on a series of displays that further endeared him to the Tottenham faithful. Friedel is now 43 but is conscious of what he eats, how he lives and trains hard to maintain the best level of fitness he can.
His signing means the buying of another keeper will be delayed until January at the earliest, but possibly next summer. Having joined us in 2011 after becoming the oldest player to ever play for Aston Villa, he went on to become the oldest player to play for us in a competitive match beating an 80 year-old record.
That sort of dedication is a shining example to our academy players and shows what you can achieve if you just put your mind to it. I have no idea how many other players can claim to be the oldest ever player at more than one club, it would be interesting to see a list.
As part of his role the American will become an American Ambassador for us, promoting the club in his homeland where football has started to take off. It is now the third most played sport in America due to the amount of amateur football played. It is a massive untapped market and one Premier League clubs are keen to get a share of.
The club gave the announcement through a statement on the official website.
This new role also allows the work on his coaching badge to continue giving him opportunities to train new groups in new situation, vital to maximise the knowledge gained. It becomes easier once you train the same people in the same location so taking him out of that comfort zone and putting him in new situation is valuable experience.

It makes you think and think quickly. You immediately have to scan for Health & Safety issues with the venue and judge the ability level of your students. Whatever plans you have in place may have to be changed at a moments noticed and amended to their ability level or the restraints of the venue.
You still have to make the training meaningful and enjoyable while achieving the desired aim you set out with.
I can tell you from first hand experience that coaching a group who have enjoyed the coaching and taken something from it is reward in itself and it's heart warming when you then see that training applied successfully in a game itself.
Any role is what you make it, Ledley King thoroughly enjoys his ambassadorial role and Brad Friedel will bring an enthusiasm to his. Friedel would love to stay at Tottenham as a player-coach or a coach and this new role does rather indicate that he may have a longer term future at the club than just a year.
Having an American associated with a club is a valuable promotion tool and one we should use to the max.

“Our goalkeeper’s ambassadorial role will have a wide-ranging remit that will include greater involvement in our global coaching programme and engaging with our 30 supporters clubs from across North America as we continue to increase our global presence and bring our international fanbase closer to the club.
“Brad has enjoyed an impressive 17-year career in the Premier League to date, representing Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa before joining us in the summer of 2011.
