Dempsey score 5th fastest goal - Video

Clint Dempsey, well known to Tottenham fans, scored the fifth fastest goal in World Cup history after 29 seconds with a superb solo effort.

He put USA 1-0 up against Ghana who rarely looked threatening. Former Tottenham striker Jürgen Klinsmann set he US up in a 4-4-2 formation with the midfield players tucked in centrally forcing Ghana to play the ball wide where there was space.

With two 1.83m (6ft 2in) central defenders any Ghana crossed from the flanks would have to be accurate and they were very poor. It was an effective tactic and looked like being successful until Ghana did eventually score in the 81st minute.

That lead however lasted 4 minutes as the US went straight back in front from a corner headed home by John Brooks Jnr.

The stats tell you about the game, Ghana 60% possession USA 40%, Ghana 21 shots USA 8, shots on target thought, Ghana 8 USA 7, goalkeeper saves, Ghana 5 USA 5.

The US defended for large periods of this game and the heat and exhaustion comes into play late on. Ghana has plenty of the ball but were doing nothing with it, each keeper making 5 saves and Ghana only having 1 more shot on target in 90 minutes tells you this is a poor Ghana team. The US had the spirit you need at the end of tiring games in these conditions.

The Germans beating 10 man Portugal 4-0 makes the USA vs Portugal clash a potential group decider for second place.
