Bobby & Benitez
I suppose it's all good news for Spurs in relation to the media leaving us alone as regards "Spurs to make the top four", especially with the Liverpool boss making the near impossible comment of "we will make the top four", although to be fair, he didn't mention which season he was implying that they accomplish this, did he?
Today, our other new media mate, Bobby Mancini, stated the following; "My target is to arrive in the top four. That is my target, I think it is possible." Again, no mention of which season this target is to be achieved, but I think we can safely say that both Bobby & Benitez were referring to this campaign.
When are Chairmen going to learn to hire English speaking managers? Bobby, you don't "arrive in the top four", you finish there, if your team can understand your commands. I don't want to sound too harsh, but then capping the comment off by stating "I think it is possible", doesn't come across as a reassuring launch target statement.
I wish the guy the best of luck, I really do. He's got a dressing room that is split down the middle, just like City fans; those that wanted Hughes and those that didn't. If he can get the highly over-rated Robinho to at least start acting like a professional footballer, then there could be some light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm not a manager and so couldn't possibly understand the pressures these guys are on. Having that in mind, wouldn't it have been better for Bobby to have said that he is a winner (as he said) and left it at that?
You see, he's not just piled the pressure on himself (and that's without having met Bellamy; God help him), but he's made it easier on Spurs and Villa. Benitez to, has made it both harder on himself and easier on the competition. At this stage of the season, I can't see Liverpool challenging for a Champion's League spot.
I do feel for the Red's to. A lot of my family and friends are true Kopites and as is the case at the moment, Liverpool are the talk of the town. I just can't see a way out for them at the moment. The club's for sale, they need a new stadium and a few quality players. Some would argue that they need a new manager to, which could mean a hefty pay-off.
The above doesn't come cheap. A new stadium, 3-4 outstanding players and the cost of purchasing the club could put the initial outlay at more than £600 million. In this current climate, I can't see someone investing that sort of cash. Maybe the Dragon's could club together and buy the club?
And just so that we're clear; I don't expect Spurs to finish in the top four. I think a realistic position for us to finish the season in, would be 5th or 6th with the current players at the club. If Villa can make a few additions in the January Sales, I can see them remaining in the top four. Isn't this season great?!
