Newcastle 1 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur

A near empty St. James' Park welcomed a Spurs team in the Carling Cup.

Newcastle fans stayed away, most claiming that it was a clear message of intent from them toward the Cockney Mafia that runs the club.

Spurs fans knew that they were in for a long night after seeing the side play a defensive 4-5-1 formation.

Backwards and sideways passing, scrappy, no movement, no cohesion, and nothing to report on in the first half.

The second half kicked off with some real urgency.

Both Newcastle & Spurs were creating chances, but it was Tottenham that took the lead with a bullet header from Roman Pavlyuchenko. Giovani's inclusion in the second half brought some much needed flair, but it was Lennon that crossed in from the left that found the rising, unmarked, Pavlyuchenko on 61 minutes.

On 65 minutes, Newcastle had a magic moment in defence, allowing the rampaging O'Hara to slot under Given.

Newcastle got a consolation goal when Gomes parried the ball into the path of Owen who shot from 12 yards into an open net.

Tottenham had finally awoken, their confidence returned!

The Spurs players need to build on from the second half performance. Pompey are next, and they are on a downward slope.

COYS!!!
