Modric Report - Croatia vs. Germany

In the first half, our new £16.5 million signing was completely anonymous. This was due to the German side playing very defensively and not allowing any space whatsoever for the Croatian team to exploit.

The second half was completely different though. Germany had to go on the attack if they were to get a goal back, thanks to Srna's first half strike.

With Germany on the attack, Luka Modric siezed the open spaces left in the German midfield and his vision and passing were supurb.

His ability to pass, move, and hit long passes has been missing from our team since the Carrick days.

The downside to his game thus far has been playing against physically strong sides like Germany who sit back.

I can see Luka being an absolute legend at the Lane, but there may be some question marks regarding his game when playing away to the likes of Bolton, etc.

    In fact, I think he only touched the ball 6 times.

    17 million pound players should be doing more against sides like Germany.

    I can see him being a flop.

  4. this lad is absolute class, can see him being a fantastic addition to the spurs team, he will add a new dimention to team, can be world class in a couple of seasons, great signing and 16.5 million, its a snip, wait and see!

  6. I only saw the second half but thought from what I saw is that he's very competent in posession, a good awareness of playing a simple but effective pass and held off challenges well. He looks slight but so many players have done before him, too say he would be a flop is a tad premature, he looks like a typical Spurs player with poise, skill and a good football brain. Let's hope he does the business in the Prem!
    Get behind him anyway, he's one of us now!
  7. I think Croatia will win this tournament.
    They play like a team. Greece won it last time out by playing as a team too.
    As regards Modric, I think that there's no chance of him playing in central midfield.

    Dos Santos and Moderic will play on the wings. Lennon will go.

  9. luca was not anonymous in the first half. He was playing behind the wings. Croatia's attack came through the wings, and was incredibly forceful and forward moving. This engaging attack is tailor made for the forwards, not for support from midfield.

    The german midfielders were very tight to luca for much of the first half in their defensive setup.

    but when it opened up he was dangerous. I think it is incredibly foolish to say he will be a flop. he held his own with the very physical german side and put over some very decent passing. I was impressed with the czech side overall, and with Luca's role in the side, particularly in the second half.
  10. whether he plays on the wing or in the center i believe after he gets used to the premier league he will be top quality. His short/long passing was brilliant, he rarely gave the ball away, linked the play in the midfield and picked the right passes in the final third. I think he along with dos Santos will inject the kind of creativity and imagination in the attack that Ramos is looking for. Now all we need is a quality striker and goalkeeper. If we can get these spurs will finish in the top four.

  12. That was a superb tackle in the final moments which set him through on goal. The yellow was a terrible decision, but more importantly, in the prem that would have been play on and 3-1 to Spurs!

    Anyway not impressed with Luka so far but I blaim the rumours before and during the transfer claiming "Luka is a two-footed dribler, classy, playing left/right/central". In fact he is a true copy of Carrick, anonymous, leaving the ball to others, mostly 3-4 y passes. A safe man to play, few mistakes, but veeeery boring considering the expections the earlier mentioned rumours built up.
  14. he was man of the match against germany that is not a small thing. modric is young and he will learn a lot in premier league, i have faith in him. im looking forward to watch him in spurs shirt this year and i alreday became a spurs fan. sorry about my bad english im from croatia. go luka, go spurs. cheers!
  15. A lot of bollocks being spouted here. Modric is a cert to play centre mid. He has two good feet, got a good range of passing,a decent engine, and twists and turns away from trouble. He'd be wasted on the wing!
  16. i see modric as a replacement for zokora. i reckon he'll definately become our new carrick. i did think he was an attack minded midfielder before i saw him play but after watchin him in these two games he is the complete midfielder. strong in the challenge, magnificient passer and a very decent shot on him. he'll play centre mid with jenas i reckon.
  17. For most of the game Modric was almost playing as a holding midfielder. If you look carefully, he resists going forward and seldomly makes runs after passing the ball. When Bilic took off Kranjcar Modric moved up into his role and we could finally see what he was capable - he could run with the ball, he could strike it (typically Lehmann fumbled) and he could play neat one twos, almost setting up another goal.
    He did a lot in the 15mins when given a more attacking role, which leads me to believe that Bilic's tactics are holding him back.
  18. jeez some people are so thick,modric is not a def mid, bilic either has to play him there or kranjkar,seeing as modric is the more all round footballer he's having to do the job which he's doing but doesnt get the best out of him ,today when kranjkar went off and modric could play his normal club position he was immense.dont watch 2 games then judge dumb twats

  20. this was quite easily a comment made for stupid people, modric was outstanding. you cannot tell me bilic told him to attack from the outset, no eduardo means they have to be a little more reserved in their approach. spurs have got themselves a really good player
  21. Rmbr people...he is still young...22/23... and will improve! I admit hes not great, but has the potential to be great! Even Wenegr said before we bought him that he would be the one to watch in this tournment!!

I think your missing something modric is much more effective when in the oppositions half, in the centre of midfeid, abit like ossie, but sometimes when he plays for croatia he plays more of a big tom role which he is good at but not as good if you have noticed when srna or kranjcar go off as at least one of them did in both games it gives Modric more freedom to surge forward. I have seen Modric play many times and he is certainly not a winger, If you play to hes strenghs and allow him freedom, He is outstanding. Remember the England game at Wembley and Modric in the middle of the park in a more free role completely playing Gerrard off the park, Im not saying he is as good as Gerrard just yet but at 22 he has so much potential he could be. So I think people need to give him a break and stop worrying.
  23. modric hasn't even played a single game for spurs and some of you are already saying he will be a flop. give the guy a chance to prove his worth. it's not right judging him before he has even played for us. after the 2008/2009 season, then you have the right to judge him. and btw euro and the premiership are to different things...
  24. hahaha all these negative comments about Modric are hilarious and obviously from Gooners,Chelski and Hammers fans. If you watched Modrics play yesterday he was outstanding, composed, keep the ball everytime he got it, was clever in his distribution and tied the team together with his quick thinking and MEANINGFULL play, and his attacking abilities were there for all to see in the final 15-20mintues when he was unshackled. The guys only 22 and he's actually making a contribution at the Euros and in qualifying... which I'm affraid to say is more than any of our boys (Lampard,Gerrard etc) did for us. People can take swipes at our signings and the clubs ambitions as much as they like, but come the start of next season we'll see what Ramos can really achieve with a squad thats only just started to be fashioned by him. Good performance considering he's playing a role given to him by the coach and possibly not his usual one.And he's been hampered by an injury and missed training a bit and can't fully stretch out I'm told so he's quite happily sitting in the middle and just dictating the play.I certainly noticed him more than Ballack, he was involved in everything and always looked for the ball and stole it a handful of times as well.Big improvement on the first game
  27. Ok the problem here is that you try to judge a player based on one game. It seem that many of commentators never understood the words "tactics", because Bilic deliberately sacrificed Modric in the first half giving him a very defensive role. And Luka is intelligent player which understand it's coach. His was not to go forward but to stay back and keep possession. In the second half he got more of the freedom and it looked better for the usual beholder. His dribbling is his greatest strength but on this tournament and in Bilic system he does not use it because Croatia is playing passes possession game with as few risk is possible. Give him freedom and you will see something completely different.

I thought Luka ran the game, even when the Krauts sat back he worked hard off the ball and people who dont play football dont realize how much more work is done off the ball than on it. Yes he is a creative player, but his workrate is un-questionable and sometimes when u play the more bullish teams, you have to just sit back and wait for your chance and Modric isn't the sort of player that will waste chances when they come. He has the mark of a true top class player and will prove to be an excellent signing, regardless of what the first anonymous idiot says

  30. Didn't see the game, but even if he hadn't played fantastically well, one cannot judge the player on two international performances. To judge a player's true potential, needs to be in a settled team. Noone says that Gerrard is a flop or is useless when he has horrendous performances alongside Lampard for England! Give the chap a break. He's one of us now and we should each want to give him all the support so we can get the best out of this talented player!
  31. Modric was calm and composed in midfield and he impressed me very much..... He´s a great passer of the ball and has a great vision. He is going to provide the attackers at Spurs with nice balls to work with!
  32. Modric is a great player but he owes everything to Avril Fernackerpan who was his trainer for 4 years.
  33. In the first half Modric was constantly busy, closing down German players, playing neat, short passes and, so I seem to remember, splitting defence on occasion. His energy seems limitless.
    In the second half, as the game opened-up, he ran down the flanks more, and played more raking passes, and still managed to close Germans down cpnstantly and tackle.
    Both styles are beneficial. Neither is 'crap'. That one player was can play one when marked tightly, and the other when given more freedom is indicative of an extremely adept player.
  34. FIRST OF ALL, HE'S ONLY 22/23 YEARS OLD, A VERY YOUNG PLAYER WHO WILL IMPROVE! FOR THIS AGE AND ON THIS POSITION HE'S MORE THAN GREAT AND BY THE WAY, CALM DOWN A BIT YOU SAW HIM ON FEW GAMES. WAIT FOR PREMIERSHIP TO START AND GIVE HIM SOME TIME TO ADDAPT. I SEE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM RUNNING TRU 11 PLAYERS AND SCORE 11 GOALS PER GAME, ARE YOU CRAZY- YOU CANNOT JUDGE HIS FULL ABILITIES BY THE ONE GAME AGAINST GERMANY CUZ HE ADAPTED TO HIS COACH INSTRUCTIONS, YOU SAW HIS DIFFERENT/MORE ATTACKING SIDE WHEN KRANJCAR WENT OUT AND HE MOVED UPFRONT. I'M SURE HE'LL BE A STAR FOR THE SPURS!

    TBH HE PLAYED AWESOME AGAINST GERMANY.

    THE INSTRUCTIONS FROM CROATIA BOSS WAS TO STAY STRONG IN THE MIDDLE AND MAKE A CONSTANT PUSH ON GERMAN MFIELDERS SO HE PLAYED ALL AROUND GAME AND WAS THE KEY THERE WITH RAKITIC.

    YOU'LL SEE MORE GREAT THINGS FROM THIS KID I'M PRETTY SURE.

He definately had a role to play.Had he not sat back and just calmed things down Germany would have taken control in the middle.He broke up play and just kept possession and that's why Bilic rates him so highly, because he does exactly what's asked of him.Croatia would only have had Niko Kovac as a defensive midfielder if he hadn't played that style, all the others are attack minded like Kranjcar and Rakitic.True team player who I feel is yet to explode and tear teams apart, which he can do at club level.He will do whatever job is required by JR and do it well I think

That was a Carrick type performance.If he can play that role as well as both wings if required then Ramos has covered two roles with one guy and that's why he got him.It also makes more sense now why he's looking at guys like Dos Santos who are flat out attack minded players.Also, although he looks small he just kept bouncing up after getting knocked over.While so called bigger guys were rolling around in agony he would get knocked over and get up like it was nothing.He's tougher than I thought.Sneijder looks tiny for the Dutch as well but he's their best player.
    He will dictate the pace of games and when spurs go 2 up in matches that's when you'll see his true worth and he'll shut up shop changing from attack to holding type player.Very good.
