Should Spurs Sell Defoe?

By Paul Mortimer

I was extremely surprised and upset at not seeing Jermain Defoe's name appear on the substitutes bench against the defeat to Arsenal last Saturday.

The media have magnified the insignificant row between a player and a coach (Defoe vs. Jol) as the final stance in the players relationship with the club. We shouldn't read too much into this as arguments between the players and coaching staff are a regular occurrences within the game.

What I am finding difficult to comprehend, is the fact that the club don't want another Campbell affair. I find this bizarre as that is exactly what they will get. If you want a player to sign a new contract, you have to play him.

If the club aren't playing a certain player, it's normally because they either do not think he's good enough, or they want him out.

The Bent signing was a clear indication that Defoe's services are no longer needed at White Hart Lane. He may get a game or two with the cup competitions coming up, but it's clear to everyone, including himself, that he'll never top Bent and Keane in the pecking order.

I feel sorry for Defoe and wish him the best of luck. If I was him, I would want out within the next transfer window.
