Sunderland 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Article by Jesse Johnstone

I, like a lot of Spurs fans didn't expect us to get any kind of result from The Stadium of Light.

Spurs couldn't have been given a worse game to start off their Premier League campaign, against newly promoted Sunderland, a side rejuvenated by massive Spurs fan, Roy Keane.

Funnily enough, Mr. Keane never supported Nottingham Forest or Manchester United, but grew up watching the likes of Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa; his bedroom walls draped in Tottenham Hotspur colours.

Sunderland and Keane couldn't have asked for a better start. I don't think for a second that any Spurs fans, including the entire team at THBN expected Tottenham to go out with all guns blazing. In fact, I think we expected the opposite effect. I truly believed that Sunderland, completely revitalised by Keane since his insertion as manager in the early stages of last season, would hammer the Spurs make-shift defence, quick firing attack after attack.

That never happened. Instead, both sides shared the play equally throughout the game, neither deciding to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

To be fair, I would have expected Spurs to have made a better game of it if our main first team was out on the pitch instead of laying in the physio's room.

On another note, we can be extremely joyful at the signing of Younes Kaboul. What a star! He never stopped running, sometimes running the entire length of the pitch. He's a large defender too, not scared of putting his boot in.

It was hard to see us lose the game in the final attack of the match, but as I didn't expect much from the game, Michael Chopra's goal allowed me to move my thoughts to Tuesday, when we'll have our real season opener, at the Lane, against Everton.

What are your predictions for Tuesday's encounter with Everton at home?
