£8 Million for a squad player?
Article by Sam Jenkins
For THBN
With the arrival of Younes Kaboul, the clubs spending is nearing £25 million (£6 million initial payment for Bale, £13 million initial payment for Bent, & a reported £6 million initial payment for Kaboul equalling approximately £25 million).
Apparently, more signings are in store too!
Has the transfer market exploded to the point where a squad player costs £8 million? After all, I can't see Kaboul taking the place of either King nor Dawson. It's great that the club have signed a much needed centre back for cover, but £8 million on a bench warmer seems too much, doesn't it?
We again come back to the left midfielder/winger position.
It seems that the club have spent the majority of their budget already. Does this mean that once again, the club will not fill the left-sided midfield position?
Some sites have even mentioned that Martin Jol doesn't see the need for a left midfielder/winger. The argument being that no other club plays with two front men and two wingers. Fair enough, that may be the case. But at least they do play with a left footed midfielder, who's instinct isn't to keep drifting in all the time.
Do you feel that the club needs to prioritise on their spending? Do you think we need cover on the left, be it a left footed midfielder or a winger with an abundance of flair?

Watching him on YouTube doesn't count.
No one heads the ball better than Michael Dawson.
King is injured at the moment and so he'll take his place. I am worried that he'll get annoyed with Jol, for when King returns, I think it'll be Dawson and King in the line up, no matter how well Kabol has been playing.
If he's the type of player that doesn't stand for being left on the bench and we need to sell him in 2 seasons, we will never get our 8 mill back.

We will be revealing site screen-shots within the next month. We'll be having a vote so that the users can decide which design to go with.

The clubs board have taken a gamble so as to break into the top four and finally claim a Champions League spot.
The good note is that the clubs wage bill is low, compared to other clubs not playing frequent Champions League games.
We do believe that Martin Jol and the rest of the management will pull it off however, especially with the demise of our closest rivals.
PS. You can request the clubs accounts from LSE. As they still are a PLC, they can email you the PDF as long as you provide records that you are a shareholder, which I am.
Talk around the club state that a further £20 million may be made available this season. If that is true, then we are talking about a lot of money.

I think the other thing to consider is for a long time we have been at the wrong end of the table so we could only attract better than average players who did not cost so much.
When you are knocking on the door of the top four you need better players and therefore they cost more.
It's just something we are not used to.
Anyway, I would expect over time we should get quite a bit back by selling players like Mido, Ghaly, Murphy etc
Finishing bottom of the league will earn you £30m, plus the restructuring of club finances by Mr Levy give me confidence that the money is there for new signings. Still think despite what people say to the contrary earlier in this chain that we need left sided talent.
Bent has been signed as insurance for next season, in case we don't make champions league and Berbs decides to move on.
Personally and I've said this for a long time, we need people with the xperience of winning things, of being in the shake up when it matters. We have as good a squad of players as anyone in the league but we don't have the winning attitude. Edgar Davids gave us that but he was not able to compete for a place over a sustained period of time. When was the last time we went to the library and played them off the park as we did the season before last.
So we need a champion with a left foot
I was speaking to someone last week and they told me that pederson was going to join us for around 7 million pounds because him and Bellamy didnt get on, but then he left. hope he is still considering.
Get loss!...follow your captain....
when the ship start to sink, the captain is the first to jump overboard...what a coward!....bunch of players who have no soul, no loyalties...no wonder campbell liked your club.
Oh and not every team has a left footed winger/midfielder, funny but without one for 2 years we've come 5th back to back, so do we really really really need one, or don't you think someone to stop us leaking soo many damn stupid goals would be better, cos imagine if we conceded 20 less goals last year....what's that I hear you say, we'd be in the champions league now?!?!
I just can't w…
Is BMJ quite literally just to build two very strong teams particularly down the spine of the team Bent Defore Bebatov and Keane AND King Kaboul Dawson and now Davies

You say that our expenditure is outweighing our income. Please explain. As I understand it prior to this window. We spent a net amount on transfers of less than £5m over the last 2 years. If you factor in Arnesen +£10m, Mansion +£6m/year, TV deal Min £30M/year plus gate receipts less costs. Finances are very healthy. We have spent £25m and have yet to move on fringe players this season. Asuming we receive £10m for those players it still leaves a healthy balance to invest.
Gallers
wonder if he can solve our left side problem.
watched him on youtube and he got a powerful left foot and with tricks as well.
Heres what "may" happen.
Kaboul and dawson slot into the 2 cb berths whilst LK slips into a CM role, lets not forget he was originally a MF and has played there for both England and us.
Theres NO WAY at £8m weve just signed a squad player ,you must be on drugs ! MJ has said hes the next desailly ,FFS hes the french U21 captain with a few yrs of Euro exp, sure hes a squad player, fuck me your doughnuts ! next time THINK before you post
"As always, THBN will continue to provide interesting topics in which Spurs fans can debate upon"
To continue suggests you started ? when ? did we miss it?
1. This next season is a rare opportunity to break into the top four, and we should not be caught napping or leaving things to chance (esp if the chance involves Ledley's dodgy knees).
2. We need a young squad that we can keep together, whilst challenging for trophies, for 2-3 years or so whilst the new stadium is being paid for. Wouldn't want to end up like the fallen Woolwich Wanderers now, would we? :)
Football Hero! - I love this guy and i'm sure he's going to go absolutely mental!!
Read all about him from the link above!!
You do NOT have to be a shareholder to get your hands onto a copy of the audited accounts and you do NOT have to go to the London Stock Exchange - you simply go to the THFC website and you can download ALL of the financial data.
I, too, am a shareholder in excess of 10,000 shares but that does not mean anything as I do not get told anything that anybody else does even though I do have contacts within WHL in the financial department and I certainly know their accounts inside out and I also know the strategic direction of the Club, both on and off the pitch.
And for anybody that is interested the percentage of players and coaches salaries is 52% of T/O.
Everybody can get to these figures via this link:

Poshspur, if you have to contact the LSE for the accounts then you are NOT a shareholder!
I have heard some bullshit on the internet but boy you take the biscuit.
Ideally, Martin Jol wants the choice of at least two fit, top-class players in every position. That makes a 22-man squad to start with. Given that it's almost impossible to keep 22 men fit for a whole season, you need cover. OK, that's why the squad is probably around 36 (I'm guessing).
So I can't understand why people are questioning the players we've acquired so far this summer. Kaboul is a brilliant signing: the frigging French U-21 captain, FFS. And yes, we definitely need cover for King, whose injuries might yet end his career, and who could easily miss the first two months of the season anyway.
I look at the signings being made by Comolli, Jol, and Levy and they look not just good, but brilliant. We're slowly building a squad that can get into, and then challenge for, the CL.
That was unthinkable four seaso…
Bale - £5m now and £5m in performance related payments
Bent - £13m initial fee (£5m now, £4m in 2008 & £4m in 2009).... the rest made up of performance related payments.....
Kaboul - €8m (approx. £6m)......
We paid £4m for Daws and he had never played in the PL, nor was he captain of the national U-21 side...
We've now bought two of the biggest talents in France who'll be huge in the future.
King has played there before - especially early on in his career and famously for England against Argentina.
We need to have a decent holding midfielder to protect the back four. Huddlestone needs to be more aggressive, and Zokora is better suited to making runs in to the opponents half.
We need someone like Makelele or Gattuso or Duscher. They're bloody hard to find though.
As for the left-winger issue... every team seems to be chasing a left winger. There's just a shortage of them in the game.
I agree that we really have to snap up a left-sided midfielder pronto..
No one has come forward with concrete evidence stating that MG Pedersen would like to join Spurs, or that Martin Jol is interested in signing him.
What is probable, is the fact that if he was to leave Blackburn, they would ask for a large transfer fee as he is a great player and proven in the Premiership.

Please see the link below. I have not stopped laughing all day. We are discussing great signings, the Scum are discussing giving away scarfs to improve the atmosphere in the new library. Ha Ha Ha

COYS COYS COYS
I can tell you all because I AM a shareholder but I want to hear your bullshit first.
Oh, and totally agree with everyone on here- rather an £8m quality back-up/contender pushing for a place than a £2m pile of dog poo who isn't going to push us on in the result of injury and fatigue. MJ, DC and DL know what they're doing, it's not an impulse buy on a par with a pair of trainers in JD Sports- this is £8,000,000 we're talking about.
can you please put your whinging lips around my penis and suck.
Thank you
fair number of you could stop
moaning.
We have just AQUIRED 3 EXCELLENT
PLAYERS.
Go back a few seasons, every 2 years,or less, a managerial change.
The new man would usually go back
to wherever he came from and bring
back rubbish.
We would have a Cup run now and again, and end up middish table, after flirting with relegation.
Winning exactly nothing.
We are now IN EUROPEAN SOCCER
and talking of the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
we have the finest squad of players
allowing for some dead wood,
i have seen for many a year.
And finally, some of the poorest
players we have, would have been
selected, under previous regimes
week in week out.
STOP MOANING and ENJOY what we now
Have.
Definate champions league level strike force and defence. Just got to sort out that upper mid table midfield. Taarabt needs to prove his 'new zidane' label.
No pressure then!
Go on the Spurs!
Have faith, my fellow Spurs fans, a very bright future is just around the corner!
My view - Wes Schneider of Ajax is the man we need. A left footed playmaker who scores lots of goals.
On the general signings topic, this year we have been on the trigger a lot faster and have signed 3 quality players so far.
Better than some of the dodgy panic buys of the past couple of seasons, namely Rocha, Murphy and Ghaly. In the same period I feel Lucas Neil (Left
& centre back), Gareth Barry (left midfield and back) and Thomas Graveson (good defensive midfield cover for Zokora) would have been more constructive seasoned squad player signings as well as leaders than the dead wood players I forementioned, and all 3 of them were not expensive. We wouldnt have needed Curtis Davies then as Lucas Neil would have provided extra CB cover and Barry could also cover the Left Back position as well as left midfield.
Still a great time to be a Spurs supporter, especially with our forward line, cannot wait...COYS!!!
