Would a Tottenham Hotspur Buyout Benefit the Club?

By Jaymes Marsh

With the mounting billionaires entering our game, it seems as though a select few clubs are left on the shortlist of potential purchases, with Tottenham Hotspur being one of them.

The Glazers’s, Mr. Abramovic, George Gillett (and Tom Hicks), and Randy Lerner have taken the plunge on Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively.

Arsenal have declined the virtues of a US based billionaire and may rebuff the Maktoum Family’s business entity, Dubai International Capital (DIC), within the coming weeks. Reports are circulating that Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of a take over, especially after ENIC, the sports hospitality company who own the controlling shares, purchased a further 12% of the London based club.

The important question all Tottenham fans should consider is whether a takeover of Tottenham Hotspur will actually benefit the club?

With their dynamic chairman, Daniel Levy at the helm, Tottenham Hotspur’s fortunes on and off the pitch have increased dramatically. Spurs currently stand as the richest club in the world to have never played in the Champions League, have sell out crowds at White Hart Lane, and have finished in the top five of the Premiership within the last two seasons.

If a billionaire were to purchase Tottenham Hotspur, would the new board increase player sales? Tottenham Hotspur already are one of the top three big spenders of the Premiership. The current board aren’t afraid to spend big if their charismatic manager, Martin Jol, feels that the player in question will benefit the squad.

If the right type of player became available in which the management had complete faith in, do you not think that the current board would purchase him, even if the cost was considerably more than any previous amount spent on a transfer fee?

Just because a businessman has the status of being a billionaire, this standing does not always mean that the billions accumulated will be spent on the club in question.

Some could argue that the salary budget would increase under new ownership, which in turn, would allow for a higher quality of player. But would it? Only Chelsea have considerably increased their wage bill to accommodate players & staff. Manchester United are using the same structure as the previous board were using as are Liverpool and Villa.

It is extremely unlikely that another Abramovic will come along and buyout Spurs from ENIC. Therefore, the club, if taken over, would be owned and run by another Glazer-type regime, an administration created with the main ambition of gaining as much profit as possible.

Do you not think that Tottenham Hotspur are the biggest club outside the current top four? Are Spurs not run as efficiently as Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal (if not better)?

Some quarters may call upon the fact that White Hart Lane is far too small a venue. Most would like to either expand or move to a bigger location, which would allow them to compete with the top four as regards stadium revenues earned.

Plans are afoot with the local council and Transport London (London Transport Authority & Organisation) with the sole ambition of expanding the transport links to the stadium. A new stadium will be built or White Hart Lane will be redeveloped; the latter being the preferred option.

My personal opinion is that Daniel Levy would do well to stay as chairman of Tottenham. His business competence is as good, if not better, than any other chairman’s in the league.

As previously mentioned, Tottenham Hotspur are the richest club to have never played in the Champions League. If the club does qualify within the 2007/2008 season for Europe’s premier league, the clubs turnover will increase substantially, allowing for further advances in the transfer market and salary wage bill.

Mr. Levy is not only an astute businessman, but he is a devoted Tottenham Hotspur and football fan to.

If taken over, will the consortium care about the fans and the traditions surrounding Tottenham Hotspur? Having the best business know-how may not be the only ingredient needed to succeed in this game.
