Why We Are Spurs Fans

New Signings, come and play for the badge. It’s interesting seeing the excitement that our bid for Baptista has stirred up.

I am of the opinion that anyone who says that they supported Spurs as a boy would know what sacrilege it would be to then consider playing for the "armpit". Judas Campbell aside obviously.

Now I would love to get this player but in the most likely event that it doesn’t happen I would like us all to think about a few things.

We have signed a lot of players recently but whether they are all world class leaves plenty of room for debate. The likes of Tainio, Stalteri, Huddlestone, Lennon and Routledge probably wouldn't get into the "Chelsh!t" squad but I get the impression that they all wanted to come to Tottenham and play for us, not the cash particularly.

Paul Robinson is living proof that we are still up there with the biggest and best and we should remember that. Give me eleven players who know what it truly means to wear the badge and play football with the words "Audere-est-Facere" tattooed in their brains as opposed to eleven so called superstars any day.

The "Sugar Years" have left us somewhat shell shocked and burdened with an ongoing bought of amnesia.

"WE ARE TOTTENHAM F%$#*!G HOTSPUR" and it’s enough to make your heart go waaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh.

Before Venables lost his bananas we were always in for all the top players and got em as well.

Too many Monday morning slatings from our mates at work over underachievement have dulled our belief in who we truly are. We are Tottenham, super Tottenham. The first to bring home a European trophy. The first team to do the double. Signing Greaves for £99.999.99 back in the day when that was equal to a million quid.

We created the template for a style of play that everyone is trying to do these days. Hoddle, Ardiles, Villa, Waddle, Lineker, Gazza, Klinsmann. If Baptista is for real then he should sign on the dotted line no worries, but if he isn't then so what.

If all of us start believing and remembering who we are than that will lift all our boys and they will play like they are world class. You all know what White Hart Lane can do to a player’s ego when we aren't sulking and only cheering. There isn't a place like the Lane.

There will never be another team like the Spurs. Our tradition and history is second to none only equal with others. When a player of real quality comes up and wants to play for us we will get him, it's as simple as that. It may take some time but if he wants to come to us it will happen.

I see a lot of moaning towards Levy for not making the signings that we all crave but I say to you this, would you rather someone come to us because of the pay packet or the challenge to makes us greater than we are?

Oh, I really should have mentioned Tony Galvin just so that our new wingers have some kind of guideline for getting to the byline and ball into box.

  2. I too feel the same way about players playing for "the badge". Problem is, you and I seem to have been around long enough to remember the days when it was really cool to wear the cockerel.

    It strikes me that the players Spurs now chase are too young to recall these times.

    Case in point, he may claim he is a fan, but Julio Baptista was born in 1981, when Ricky Villa was busy undressing the Man City defence.

    Let's face it. We ain't been tha shit for 25 years now.

    I'm not too sure WHL is the draw it once was. No CL, no UEFA, not even Inter-Toto!

    Don't get me wrong, I think the club is finally back on the right track, but I get why a young player like Baptista might bypass Spurs for a so-called "Top-4" team (ie. ManU, Gooners, Chelski, or L'pool)

    Still, I too continue to see Tottenham as a "big" club, but not holding my breath that today's player shares my sentiments.

    It's no longer a game, but a business, where a player has a limited amount of time for which to earn his retirement cheques.

  6. Sure, I am a big fan and if i were a world beater, I'd play for Spurs... for the same wages as Defoe or any current star in the team.

    Spurs have got to pay the market price for quality. That's only fair. Baptista needs to be shown just that.
  7. Why would Spurs break with their recent policy and buy someone exponentially more expensive than the rest of the squad who has yet to play in the rigours of the PL? We have tried it before with a certain Ukranian and looked like twats because of it.

    This isnt going to happen and if it does I am not sure I would be too pleased. We have enough firepower now anyway. We are not Chelsea so lets spend our money wisely and where it is needed, in the middle.

    I am convinced this is the club forcing Arsenal's hand to give them more money. Nothing more.
    ...and I dont mind them doing that if that odious lot have to shell out a few million more.

    And on this thread....I agree players dont play for loyalty or love of a club....look at Chelsea, a few years ago pulling in crowds of <20K playing in a shithole of a ground whose only cups in the cupboard were ones used by the tealady. Money talks when you get to the type of money on offer these days, every player has his price. As we all do.

    The first phase has passed and we are moving into the next phase which means some expensive players.

  13. we are going in the right direction because we are outbidding the scum on a player they want more then us, baptista is probably class but 14 mill is a lot and i am sure there is an unheard of player at some team who is just as good (just think of the best player down your local park and compare him 2 someone like swp). Only worry is couple of times we have had money to spend on 1 player we havnt come up with aces, lets hope we at least come up with kings next time

  14. We havn't progressed enough to be spending this kind of money on one player. If we had qualified for the CL then yes, go for it. Our current strikers are all more than capable of pushing us on, surely the money should be spent on other areas of the team i.e. midfield and maybe even a left back (Edman not good enough going forward). Unless we are in the CL we can't attract the `top` players as we the wage demands are too high and they want to be competing in europe. The bottom line is money talks. Spurs are a massive club with a great history but that counts for pretty much nought these days. Sad but true. The fact that `The Beast` followed Spurs as boy won't help us to sign him. That twat Parker supported us yet has turned us down twice, probably due to money.

    This bid for Baptista is deliberate and calculated, with a stronger management team in place. They have come up with the sums.

    With people like carrick to feed him, and people like defoe for him to look for, he will rip teams appart. Its all about pace in the premiership and now we've got it. He is a bit short though.

  19. Good article, sums up what a lot of us feel. The only thing I take issue with is where you say we are second to none, equal to some. In terms of belief that may be so, but in our history we have failed to achieve a prolonged period of success. We must win championships to be in that top echelon. We are the sixth most successful team in the land but if we were to win the prem and challenge consistently, we would be up there with the Arse, utd and liverpool in terms of stature.
  20. I have heard many people say that Routledge is too small - do people not realise that this is a big advantage for a winger. Low centre of gravity promotes better ball control, balance and quick feet. Why do we need a bean pole of a winger?

    What first phase? You mean the last half of last season? For God's sake give the kids some time to develop. No quick fixes. Picking up inexpensive but young talented English players who have potential has been the policy that is a departure from past thinking at WHL .. and don't mess with it cuz it appears 2 b working.. that is if a few impatient yids can grab some perspective and strap themselves in for a fun ride -- one that may take a year or two to stat bearing fruit. RElax and enjoy it.

  23. 12.43pm...you have to "move" faster...no one is messing with the system...the system has worked well so far without your participation...now Levy and co who have set the policy of buying british is also thinking of buying some players which may drain us of a few quids...so have faith in their plans.
    They know what they are doing and so do Jol who have mentioned that he wants players who can take the team to the next level THIS season.
    Don't think like a certain Mr Hoddle and have "hopeful" 5 years plans...sometimes you must balance patience with some sense of urgency or the world would whiz past you.Ok ?

If they are looking at bringing in Baptista then it could be a very good aquisition. 50 goals in 2 seasons in La Liga certainly means he is no mug and is why his value has risen from the £1.75M Sevilla paid for him. La Liga is not too different from the EPL and these are definately the 2 best leagues in the world.
    Granted near on £14M is a lot especially as we already have 4 strikers who are nipping in with pre-season goals. So will Mido's loan be cut short, will Robbie or Fredi be moving on? You would think that one would. If it is one of the latter then we will recoup £5-6M therefore Baptista will be costing £7M. The going rate at the moment? Yakubu £7M, Bellamy £5M, Crouch touted at £7M.
    Jolly and Levy are too shrewd to simply waste money and would have looked into this in detail.
    Lets also hope that we get the classy midfielder that we have been crying out for. Sell Fredi (£5M) and bring in Baptista and Guti for a that money + £13M. Good buiness if you ask me. And if they can si…
  25. If they want a winger to aspire two, then the two most recent, Waddle and Ginola would be good role models, but we older supporters would also say look at Cliff Jones. He had everything.

After watching the highlights last night I think we have made a lot of progress, Keane and Kanoute work so well as a front two, Routledge looked class, even Reid is starting to show he worth, what a reserve keeper we have in Cerny and Huddlestone looks promising already. The only dissapointment were the back two of Gardner and Davenport, but Dawson and King look so solid, I doubt we would have conceded with them in defence. Whether we get baptista or not doesn't matter as I think the two wingers we have now will see us right, Baptista will be a nice bonus. Levy and Jol are getting it right, so lets get behind them and the team who all seem to want to play for us.

    Is Baptista (or any other big money signing) going to make, say, Reto Zeigler any more experienced this year? No. That's my point. Unless your last name rhymes with Go-ram-your-bitch, there are no fast fixes or free passes to the next level. The one thing the young lads Spurs have just finished assembling now need is time to develop -- both individualy and as a cohesive team...and no big-money signings will give them that.

    Get behind them and have faith in their latest bidding even their mistakes at times...They have on the whole given us something to hope for.

    Even if it doesn't suit your "strategic" thinking you have to trust this men who run the club day to day.Unless you can claim to have run a football team or own a business successfully.

    To previous comments. I was not knocking the young players at all. I rate Zeigler, Carrick etc, I am glad with what has been done. But how can you say that Baptista & Guti would be quick fixes? Granted they have not experianced the PL but we have to trust the managments judgement. As previosuly stated Baptista 50 goals in 2 seasons and Guti experianced at every level. Hardly quick fixes.
    We need european experiance alongside the youth to change the dimension of our play. I am not knocking the youngsters and truly believe they will play their part in good times ahead.

    I dont think I am being too optimistic. Our second team is probably better than MU, Arse and Pool. 38 matches is a long journey. Injuries to some key players are inevitable, especially when these teams are also in Europe. Spurs will just need to keep on improving and maintain the excellent team morale.

  35. Yes this is anothr problem. Are the so called big time players just using Spurs to engineer moves to other clubs. I see Appiah has just signed for Fenerbache after saying that he wanted to play for Spurs. Are they better tha Spurs? The answer is no but the are in the Champions League.
    I would like someone like Guti to say "Yes theres serious talent there. I want to go there with my experiance and help them acheive what they are capable of". Surely that would be more satisfying personally than going to an also run in the CL.

    Then again thats just me being optimistic.

Investment in quality young player`s is the avenue we should of went down years ago, instead of wasting million`s of quid`s on player`s who where never gonna be good enough to lift us back into the top five, let alone a C.L. spot which we are crying out for. Our new young team will grow together and create a bond of freindship and loyalty, every successful team has this, this is just one of the reason`s i think martin jol is the right one for us, he`s not taking any shit that could cause problem`s in the camp, kanoute, keane and mido are all great players but no one is bigger than the club, this is the attitude we`ve needed for a long time, for so long players have called the shot`s because the position we`ve been in, time`s are starting to change down the lane.

Alot of that i think is down to Robbo, when he basically told arneson he can go fuck himself and signed a 7 year deal, that got everyones spirits back up.

    I was told that Baptista is as big as Heskey but that's where the similarity ends. He's more pacey and agile and with that typical Brazilian flair and skill to boot. I hope he creates goals for others too.

We were the first team LAST CENTURY to do the double 3rd all time, You also forgot we are the only team ever to win the FA Cup as a non league club... 1901 we are equal to everybody because Man U never won anything for years neither did Arsenal or Liverpool for that matter until recently we were the most succesful club at Wembly, so be proud of our history. I feel we are the next success story waiting to happen, our youngsters are going to be brilliant BUT we do need someone like well not just like I think we need the BEAST, to WIN you need to score more than the opposition 38 nil nil draws will leave you in a relagation spot!!!!
    We have TWO superb Keepers Cerny is 4th best Keeper in the prem behind Robo Chech and Given, we have 3 great centr backs King Huddlestone and Dawson, (Naybet as coover) Staltiri Left back with Zeigler and Edman as cover kelly, Ifil at right back both young and improving also have Defendi.

    Last year i was moderately excited, we'd got rid of pleat, got in a decent DOF and had Tackleberry from police acedmy in charge, oh and some dutch fella coaching!

    This year i cannot wait for the season to begin!

Why don't we ask if we can approch the Beast MJ is well respected in Europe, we offer Saville say £5 Million to sign a contact to get him next year, then we offer the Beast a contact worth half of the 8 million left from the 13 million bid, we then get him with his European passport for 13 million INCLUDING his wages. That way he's happy (passport plus playing for his favourite club) Saville are happy that they have his services for another year and he doesn't leave on a bosman free, and everybody at Spurs is happy, we get our man and all our youngsters have another year to stake a claim for their place.
    Plus the news that he signs for us might buck up kanoutes and Mido's ideas, you never know others might be more keen to sign... And most of all the fans will be happy, we get our man and P**S Arsenal off BIG time........

    Like I say we sign him on a pre contract so he comes next season, works out cheaper and will give our strikers a kick up the backsdide they need, I don't want Defoe to leave but if we have a replacement lined up great, if he stays then we have Mido's replacement after his loan finishes, also this season Barnard etc get chance in League cup and as substitues.

Spurs would be buying him as a striker granted but what I was saying is that it can't hurt having someone who can drop back to support the strikers or a lone striker and still bang in the goals. Versatility is the key and Eric has been correct in his posts by saying that there is young quality throughout the squad who will get better with more 1st team appearances rather than reserve games however it is not right to heap too much onto their shoulders which is why someone like Baptista is required. I know he is also young however he can bring a different dimension that our home grown talent can pick up on.

    I hope that people realise that I like all of you hope for success and we are going in the right direction. I am just saying that that little extra isn't a bad thing.

    The England Under-21 international has emerged as a top target for Canaries boss Nigel Worthington as he looks to inject quality into his squad.
