What’s To Come?

By Rackny

Following on from Molly’s article “Why We Are Spurs Fans” top article.

The other day the debate went on about the state of the current squad and how we are heading for good times and success.

I cant remember how many times I have said this in pre-season only to be unsurprisingly disappointed come May. Actually it is normally by February.

However I honestly think the tide is turning. I am actually finding myself being openly optimistic to supporters of other teams. I am not finding myself the brunt of the jokes about ‘another mid table finish then’ or ‘oh I see Spurs are buying Ronaldo then’.

Other team’s supporters are actually sitting up and saying bloody hell they are putting together a tidy little squad there. They play good stuff. I wouldn’t like to be playing them at the moment.

And do you know what they are right.

The latter part of last season you could see the glimpses of quality starting to shine through. Big Martin’s authority was starting to be stamped into the players. The team was playing his way, finally shaking off the Frenchman’s ways.

They weren’t letting their heads drop. They were playing for each other. And with that extra bit of luck we would have been travelling to Europe for football reasons and not just for a two week package deal in the Algarve.

This season we find ourselves with a squad of players who can actually bring what the fans are desperate for; European Football and they can do it playing the Spurs way.

You have to hand it to Mr Levy and his team for backing Martin Jol and allowing quality players to be brought on board.

I know Fat Frank defected, but as TopYid so superbly put it a couple of days ago, Paul Robinson stuck two fingers up at him and said: “Bollox ya c**t we don’t need ya”.

Robinson then promptly signed a 7 year contract just showing how much he wants to play for the club and its supporters.

The players know they are onto something good. They want to be a part of it.

They want to be referred to in sentences along with Hoddle, Greaves, Lineker, Ginola, Ardiles, and Gascoigne.

I agree with Martin Jol who says we are still one or two experienced players short which is why so many of us were saying on this website that they want to see someone like Sevilla's Julio Baptista a.k.a 'The Beast' (50 goals in all competitions in two seasons) or Real Madrid’s Guti. Someone who has that little bit extra; a different dimension that can rub off on our young talent.

Robbo, Stalteri, King, Dawson, Kelly, Carrick, Tainio, Routledge, Lennon, Defoe, Mido, plus Edman, Keane, Kanoute, Cerny, Naybet, Davis, Davenport, Reid and the very special Reto Ziegler.

All our above players have played international football at some level.

Stick a couple of European experienced players in as I mentioned before.

Can anyone honestly say that this Spurs squad is worse than Middlesbrough’s, Bolton’s, and Everton’s or even the European Champions Liverpool?
The answer is quite simple. No.

I can optimistically say the future is bright. Come you Spurs ---- Let’s cheer on the Jolly Orange Man and his blue and white army.
