We Miss Out On A Big Name
By Jaymes Payten-Marsh
For THBN
Christian Vieri has signed for AC Milan on a free. He has signed a contract reportedly worth £43,000 per week until the end of the 2006/2007 season.
So, we have missed out on another signing that I feel could have lifted us to new heights.
Tottenham representatives definitely spoke to Vieri over the weekend, so it's not as though we weren't in for him in the first place.

Some of you have said that if we had signed him, he would have only joined for a final payday. How can that be? The Champion League finalists don’t sign players unless they are of excellent calibre, can apply themselves properly and have great technical ability.
Many of you are also split between Fredi Kanoute. Should he stay, should he go? I won’t give my opinion on this one as I’ll likely get trashed again.
The truth is that we are being constantly linked with strikers. Should we read anything into this?
One thing I do believe is that we need to sign a big name player, someone that is nearing his 30’s. A player that can lift our young squad to new heights. Some may argue that one player won’t be able to do that. To that remark, I remind them to look back to the 94/95 season, when a blonde German entered our ranks and lifted everyone involved at Spurs.
We may not be in the doldrums as we were back then, but a young team needs a leader. They need a player that will command respect in the dressing room and that will talk words of wisdom when needed.
Is their a player out there that can do this for us? Do you feel we need a player like this?
I for one certainly do.

Pleased with the policy they have.
Big name, big ego, big paycheck, big problem.
We would be better off if we'd signed scott parker the Toon. But then he seems to hate us somehow, despite being a self-confessed boyhood fan of Spurs!
I heard Dean Ashton can be our next Sheringham...
Posh, on the other hand... I actually enjoy your posts.
Your point about German legend JK is well taken. I, personally, agree with your plea for more veteran leadership to help steer this young team. Mendes has had success, but has a language barrier. Naybet is popular with players, but not gonna be a regular in the starting lineup like, say, Figo would be! Stalteri will be a help. But, you know, I miss our Teddy Sheringham. Good to see him back up with Ham, but wish he were a wee bit younger 'cuz he'd be a perfect fit at WHL again (3rd time's a charm!?) What a solid guy, great playmaker, and respected by everyone, plus a good leader & communicator! I know we won't see Teddy again though, so who is available that Spurs can afford and would fit the bill for real? (ie. forget about Gerrard) It should be a player who has won honours, isn't too old, speaks English, and still plays for his country on occa…
Remember you heard it here first.
We'll see in the friendies soon enough.
That was a joke right?
Mido will never be fit. He's a fat oak!
Bring in Jan Whatever Inc your name is.
Imagine Carrick & Gerrard. Englands midifield.
If he's worth £30 million, ask Joe Lewis for the cash Levy.
God I hope they go bust!
I'n sure he will be in our starting eleven hwn PL starts again.
We have more than enough of those who can defend and fight (and they are of course needed too), but nobody at the heart of the midfield who could be called creative...
And when it gets hard, is Figo the man to help the team back to right trail...no! He's the first to whine and cry about everything...
Rosicky or Van Bommel would have been ideal for the job, but we couldn't get them.
And it will be very hard to get anybody abroad cause we cant offer CL-football...and in England those kind of players are very limited.
Baros will duplicate Defoe too much, they both like to fall back to the hole. We need a target man of the Sheringham mold.
Tainio, Routledge, Garrick and the yet missing playmaker should be the first to start at the midfield.
He's not a new Litmanen (who in his best days would have been ideal playmaker for us), but as said, he is good both ways.
He's fast enough for first 11, skillfull enough for first 11, and he never stops fighting.
One not so good thing is, that he has had he's share of injuries, but is still far from being sicknote the second...
But who will take the important place next to Ledley...surely not Davenport. Is Dawson good enough to do it..?
Hope it's not still Naybet.
Who agrees with me? Jol?

I'd say try to keep Keano, sell Kanoute and give Mido a chance to show if he's up to it.
If not, then we have to buy a big striker, who can make opportunities to Defoe and Keano. But please, not Crouch...
I agree with yoiu but Tainio should be higher up the ranks and Fulóp will be our backup keeper in no-time. You rate Mendes too high I think, as a winger he is useless in central midfield he may be in the 1st 11. Remains to be seen...
I also don't think Mendes is going to be a starter...should maybe be sold?
hahahaha
Stalteri will play ahead of Kelly most likely.
And the same goes for the playmakers, unfortunately.
It is not an easy task to get classy players, even if it isn't the money that's in the way.
It's whole new ballgame after couple of seasons, when we are at the CL :-) ...then everybody are trying to get to Spurs, even if they're not good enough.
So the question is, can we get to CL with the current crop of players we have?
After knee surgery he hasnt been the same, hence the low price.
Wes Sneidjer would be interesting though.. however no idea on the status of his availability
He should be up front, elbowing defenders, fighting for crosses and making chances for others and himself.
How many target man has got speed in them? Is Sheringham known for his pace? Atouba had played in central midfield for his previous clubs.
Nevertheless, Atouba is an interesting proposition. His skill is good for someone with his size. But for me, he simply takes too many risks when he is on the ball, and I'm not convinced he could ever beat a defender one-on-one. Besides, why should Spurs waste time trying to develop him, when there are better suited players available?
How old was Atouba when we bought him last year? 22.
To be honest I am not convinced that he can ever be a great left back. Too flashy for a defender. And not pacey enough to be a winger. But he has the strength and height.
The posistion is right, earns respect, will bring on his England proegete`s, and will stick one firmily up the arse.
Come on David finish your career where it started.
But we'll probably have to wait for another 2 years to see him play in the lillywhites of Spurs.
Mendes has had success, but has a language barrier.
Mendes can speak perfect English, better than most gooners anyway..
So I don't know where people get this difficulty with languages from...
we shud sell kanoute, 5 mill to west brom. send mido packin, get rid of pamarot, davis, gardner, davenport, atouba, edman, mendes. and few of the youngsters who arent gonna feature. we have a good young british squad building, jenas and downing would be good but doubtful. aj is overrated along with crouch. we need to sign a brazillian playmaker or someone with flare. baptista, diego etc.
Sell the whole squad why don't ya!
Gun(Norway)
I think Vieri would've done a job a spurs. He knows where the goal is and is a big lad in the right mould for defoe to work off the knock downs/flick ons vieri would have provided. I think Ashton would do well although he has declared his loyalty to norwich recently, but then gerrard said he couldnt leave pool after the CL win so who knows.
Give Dawson a chance at CB with King, he'll do well.
Pamarot has to go he's shocking
Not to sure on who we should go for with regards to that playmaker position. As ever we will go for the best but get turned down buy them, it is the same story every year JJ from toon would be good signing also like the idea of baptista, good shout whoever mentioned him.
what has he done @ liverpool?? answer has to be very little
you cant question his talent but you there is a big ? over his mentality - besides he sued gary lineker and every1 loves lineker
i am scepticle on that one if its chelski after him then who knows but otherwise he isnt going anywhere.

MANCHESTER City manager Stuart Pearce has switched his striker search to Freddie Kanoute - after scrubbing Peter Crouch from his list.
Pearce is ready to bid for the Tottenham star as he looks for a talented target man to lead the line - and the City chief knows Spurs will sell.
The Blues will make a formal bid for 27-year-old Kanoute once the futures of Shaun Wright-Phillips and skipper Sylvain Distin are sorted out.
But they have done their homework in the past few days and think a deal is on.
Kanoute is out of favour at White Hart Lane and one of the players who will be sold to fund the next couple of signings manager Martin Jol is planning, including England and Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson.
The fee would be around £4 million, money City cannot afford until they sell Wright-Phillips or Distin, but they still plan to make Kanoute their star buy when one of them goes.
Kanoute has already turned down W…
FOOTBALL SPY: SPURS IN HUNT FOR VASSELL
SPURS have made a surprise enquiry about Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell, raising doubts over Jermain Defoe's White Hart Lane future.
Tottenham boss Martin Jol is considering making a move for the England international, who struggled last season and has been pushed down the Villa pecking order by the arrival of Kevin Phillips from Southampton.
bridge would be a good signing at left back
another chelsea player could be joe cole if they keep buying competitors to him and remember he only broke thru last term due to injuries how long will he put up with 10 mins here and 20 there in world cup year.
you all want creativity well there it is in an abundance
any thoughts
keane scored what, 16 / 17 goals last year ? and that's from only playing half the games.
truth is, we don't really need much more at all, the team in place just needs time to gel - which is what mendes nailed the other day saying this is year 1, last was year zero.
full strength and gelled spurs will be very competetive and a euro place is only theirs to lose.
robinson
kelly king dawson edman
routledge mendes carrick ziegler
kanoute/mido keane/defoe
not too much wrong with that and plenty of cover across the park.
a bit less fantasising and a touch more realism is required. and don't listen to the media! figo is NOT coming to white hart lane.
you heard that right here.
All efforts should be on buying Rosicky. He's absolute quality and would fit in alongside Carrick/Mendes etc.
£8 million is the asking price.
Forget Vassel. He scores more goals for England than he does for Villa.
For those of you waiting for this 'big name signing' I'm afraid you are going to be dissapointed...
We are not going to get anyone going up against the likes of Chelsea and Real so Joaquin and Gerrard are out of the question.
We have the nucleus of a great team with Robinson, Ledley and defoe but building a team around those guys will take time.
I, like the rest of you love hearing Tottenham linked with all these world class players but the truth is the players we are likely to get are the ones that are not being talked about, thats Levy's way of doing business.
We could do with centre-back, midfielder, winger and striker and anyone that doesnt want to be at spurs for the long haul should be sold now....
Heskey + Gerrard - Don't be stupid
Vassell - Scored 2 goals in 20 odd games last season and barely made double figs over last few years
Johnson - HALF his goals last season came from penalties which we don't get! He's not that good
Cahill - Recent signing to Everton who are in CL and not skint anymore, are they gonna sell?
Van der Vaart + d'Alessandro - both would have been good but have recently signed/resigned for Hamburg and Wolfsburg respectively so how are we gonna get these?
Torres - "The forward we should be going for is Fernado Torres of spain.A world class player and we could get him at a reasonable price before the rest of the world hear about him!" - Just 1 point... THE WHOLE WORLD HAS KNOWN ABOUT HIM FOR YEARS BECAUSE HE'S SUCH QUALITY! Man U and Chelsea have been after him for 2-3 years as have R Madrid & Barca. He would cost about £20-25mill i…
Atouba will always be Atouba. lets not compare him with Henry, potential-wise. Henry doesnt win many crosses with his head, while Atouba has done it very often albeit defensively! I think Atouba as a forward could at least be better than Heskey and Rebrov combined.
BTW, he's scored one CL goal more than the rest of the team (against Pool in a 3-3 draw with Basel)
Put Reid in the centre and allow him to run at the defence, whilst we've got Brown and Carrick to cover.
If Keane doesn't sign a new contract this summer, sell him and bring in Dean Ashton.
We don't want any overpaid overrated OLD players, stick with our policy for the future, we will be a force in a couple of seasons.
For starters, while he's not doing much being Edman's back-up, we can always test him in reserve matches or ideally loan him out to Leyton (or any long ball teams) for 3 months.
A strong forward who can also tackle would not be a bad idea anyway.
Everton showed that having a great dressing room atmosphere can get you places and Spurs have the potential to have the best atmosphere in the prem this season. Reason?....most of the players are English and will therefore understand each other and get along easier.
We should also remember that our squad at this moment in time is easily good enough to get into uefa cup and with Gerrard leaving Liverpool maybe spurs can nick that fourth place as well.
This season is going to be Jols first full season in charge so his real reign starts here.

"Ibrahimovic is the man for me to score us 20-25 goals a season and fire us into Europe."
No sh*t sherlock, however Ibrahimovic is at Juventus, Serie A champions for the 3 of the last 4 seasons and consistently good in CL, was bought for £10m scored 16 last season and as Juve have contemplated selling Trezeguet this summer Ibrahimovic is going nowhere.
You might as well say Adriano, Shevchenko, Henry and Ronaldinho are the players to fire us into Europe.
I agree with the last comment though, we need to make Europe next season or our young talent will start to look elsewhere whether we want to get rid or not.
As the Ibrahimovic thing, you are a joker.... that's not happening. Yeah we missed out on Vieri (and can't remember who mentioned his wages, but bothered when the player is free) but look at it this way, Tottenham or AC Milan!?! You decide, not landing him against the European finalists isn't a failure, it's common sense!
As for a new striker, AJ, as pointed out, well overrated, only scored about 10 goals from open play, think he scored over half his goals from the spot! I can't think of a striker we could get, that woul…
He's the typical anchor playmaker, sitting back to spray passes while keeping the team shape.
Vassel would be 100 times better than Kanoute.
also get real with the speculations.
