Spurs 3 – 1 Lyon

Spurs win the Peace Cup in South Korea.

An amazing game in which Spurs dominated the first half from start to finish, scoring three goals with Kelly scoring from a deflected shot and Keane rapping up his brace.

Lyon played much better in the second half but could not penetrate Tottenham’s backline. The French champions were awarded a penalty and scored it late on in the second half after the referee had judged that Gardner handballed in the area.

As Spurs fans, we must really take great comfort from this thrilling display from our lads. Remember, Lyon are not only one of the best teams in Europe, but are also the current French champions.

The players that really stood out for me were the following:

Cerny. Not just a great display in today’s match, but in the other group matches in which he played. Many people say that Chelsea have the best two keepers in the land in Cech and Cudicini, but I can assure you that Cerny is better than Cudicini.

King. The lad gets better and better with each season. So strong and reliable when called upon.

Carrick. I know that many of you feel that Carrick is a waste of space, but I can assure you that without him sitting in front of the back four orchestrating every pass by breaking down the oppositions attack, there would be no Spurs as we currently know them. Make no mistake; Carrick is the player that makes the entire team tick.

Tainio. Calm, assured, positive, confident. One of the finds of the season. The lad just doesn’t stop running. His through balls are also great.

Marney. If he continues his current progress, he will be our Steven Gerrard. He still has a lot to learn, but this young lad can tackle, pass and has a thunderous shot. His dead-ball specialties aren’t bad either.

Mido. He should be our left winger. His superb crossing led to Keane’s goals today. I am sure Martin Jol will be looking to make Mido’s move permanent and with Roma bankrupt, I am sure a deal can be sorted out quickly.

Keane. Superb. I hope he signs his contract and stays for many years to come. He can work on his goal celebration though.

So there you have it. We have much to look forward to in the coming season. If we can emulate the performance of today against many teams in the Premiership, then there is no reason that we won’t be able to make the Champions League 4th spot.

The only sour note of the day was when Pedro Mendes was substituted for Marney. Mendes had come on at the start of the second half and was replaced by Marney with around 10 minutes to play. It was obvious that he didn't want to come off. When he did finally come off, he threw his shirt to the ground and walked off down the tunnel not looking too pleased.

Spurs will receive prize money of around £1.2 million plus a further £200,000 for appearances. The prize money of this tournament is greater than the League Cup prize money, which is around £1 million.

As winners, Tottenham will be invited to participate in next years Peace Cup.

Well done to the lads and the management at Spurs.
