Spurs Win The Peace Cup

Spurs 3 – 1 Lyon
Spurs win the Peace Cup in South Korea.
An amazing game in which Spurs dominated the first half from start to finish, scoring three goals with Kelly scoring from a deflected shot and Keane rapping up his brace.
Lyon played much better in the second half but could not penetrate Tottenham’s backline. The French champions were awarded a penalty and scored it late on in the second half after the referee had judged that Gardner handballed in the area.
As Spurs fans, we must really take great comfort from this thrilling display from our lads. Remember, Lyon are not only one of the best teams in Europe, but are also the current French champions.
The players that really stood out for me were the following:
Cerny. Not just a great display in today’s match, but in the other group matches in which he played. Many people say that Chelsea have the best two keepers in the land in Cech and Cudicini, but I can assure you that Cerny is better than Cudicini.
King. The lad gets better and better with each season. So strong and reliable when called upon.
Carrick. I know that many of you feel that Carrick is a waste of space, but I can assure you that without him sitting in front of the back four orchestrating every pass by breaking down the oppositions attack, there would be no Spurs as we currently know them. Make no mistake; Carrick is the player that makes the entire team tick.
Tainio. Calm, assured, positive, confident. One of the finds of the season. The lad just doesn’t stop running. His through balls are also great.
Marney. If he continues his current progress, he will be our Steven Gerrard. He still has a lot to learn, but this young lad can tackle, pass and has a thunderous shot. His dead-ball specialties aren’t bad either.
Mido. He should be our left winger. His superb crossing led to Keane’s goals today. I am sure Martin Jol will be looking to make Mido’s move permanent and with Roma bankrupt, I am sure a deal can be sorted out quickly.
Keane. Superb. I hope he signs his contract and stays for many years to come. He can work on his goal celebration though.
So there you have it. We have much to look forward to in the coming season. If we can emulate the performance of today against many teams in the Premiership, then there is no reason that we won’t be able to make the Champions League 4th spot.

The only sour note of the day was when Pedro Mendes was substituted for Marney. Mendes had come on at the start of the second half and was replaced by Marney with around 10 minutes to play. It was obvious that he didn't want to come off. When he did finally come off, he threw his shirt to the ground and walked off down the tunnel not looking too pleased.
Spurs will receive prize money of around £1.2 million plus a further £200,000 for appearances. The prize money of this tournament is greater than the League Cup prize money, which is around £1 million.
As winners, Tottenham will be invited to participate in next years Peace Cup.
Well done to the lads and the management at Spurs.

good to see in the first half movement from our wingers in and out with our forwards pulling their defenders everywhere.
starting to think we need another left back as cover for edman bunji did not look to good.
he was still our weak link in the 2nd half though
p/s Roz are you the anti-dwarf bloke?
As for the game it was fantastic to see us play a european team, let alone beat them soundly !
What we mustn't forget in all of this is that we're only as strong as our weakest links. Players like bunji / gardener are simply not good enough and it stood out ( as always ) against quality opposition.
Team looked good though, can see something happening with the team and I really hope it will happen this season for everyone.
He may not be on form every match but today is why we love him so much.
And yes, that was a goal he scored with his head!
He must sign a new contract at all costs
Looks like he's a gonner tho' never mind, with Tainio, Davis, Brown, Carrick, Reid, Lennon, Routledge, Marney,Ziegler etc the guys going to struggle for 1st team place and he know's it.
Keano then promptly added a 3rd and it was game over. This is a fantastic result, beating a side who just narrowly missed a Champions League semi-final last season and are French Champions is outstanding. Especially as they had a near full strength side out. Well done to Martin Jol and the boys. Pre-season is going so well I just hope we can re-create this when the real season kicks off!
I fucking love spurs - C'mon !
Don't want to piss on anyones fireworks but wait for the new season and then we'll see what happens...
Inter-galactic-Toto will be irrelevant.
If the forwards do not get the ball passed to their feet they will not score.
My main concearn for the team has to be in the full back area though. I feel Kelly and Edman are very good players, and Stalteri will obviously provide cover/competition, but short of that we may be lacking. Until Pamarot comes back we could be relying on Bunjy!
Has anyone else noticed it?
Cerny
Kelly King Gardner Edman
Taino Carrick Reid
Routledge Mido
Keane
All in all a very satisfying performance.
COYS
I have heard Jol say that he used the Chelsea formation while at his old club in Holland.
He's tried it before but it hasn't worked. I think it was against WBA when he had Keane, Defoe & KanKan up front.
The difference this time round?
Mido.
If you read the first few comments, you will see that.
We are now debating the team. This is a debate site.
This is a market we haven't yet breached.
More income equals better training facilities, academy's, players, stadium, etc
Liverpool won the CL. But now goal-scorer Smicer is gone. Dudek and Baros are on their way. And Traore is still not winning any popularity votes.
Don't be stupid. You must be his agent.
Crouch?? You must be kidding?
Keep the squad as it is. If we are going to add anyone, then let it be an attacking midfielder.
As for all the other striker talk, the simple fact is we do not need another striker. The one area where we could do with a big signing is in attacking midfield as many people are saying. Baptista would have been perfect, but if nobody is available then we have a good enough squad to challenge the top six, until the man we need becomes available. And who knows, maybe one of our existing squad will become that player....Lennon, Hammadoui even Marney...all young enough to improve. And if all else fails there is always jonnie jackson
But then El and Barnard deserve their run anyway.
If they both go, we just have to hope that we don't meet them in the Champions League in 2006/2007 season.
Baptista will almost definitely move to Arsenal or will stay in Sevilla.
He won't be joining us

Whole squad rose to the competition and congrats all round.
Yid4Life.
But to beat Lyon must say something of the progress so far under MJ.
Someone suggested that the prize money should be used as a bonus for the affable MJ, I think that is not too bad an idea.
With optimism and confidence sky high and with our bank accounts swell with money, all it take is that "dream signing" to make us real force to challenge Liverpool for the 4th spot.Honestly, apart from Gerrard, I see no reason that our squad is any less strong than theirs. In fact I think we are stronger.
M.Essien
ALWAYS HAD FAITH IN REID AND MIDO, SEE ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT SLAGGED THEM OFF ALL THE TIME IN PREVIOUS BLOG'S CHANGING THERE MIND, "WE'LL I ALAYS LIKED HIM ATTITUDE" BOLLOX, WANKERS, FUCK OFF AND LEAVE TRUE YIDS TO SUPPORT THE SPURS, FIRST TROPHY OF THE SEASON LETS GET SOME MORE WITH THE WINNING MENTALITY WE HAVE AT THE MINUTE, THOUGHT WE PLAYED SOME GOOD FOOTBALL IN THIS TOURNAMENT LETS KEEP ITUP FOR READING AND PORTO!!

abraomavich convicted of fraud and scumsea wound up in the high court.
wenger put inside for being a fucking nonse.
west ham to go straight down
We know 1st two are spot on but unlikely. Still, one out of three not bad.
Fucking west ham slags
I was not able to see the game, and it would seem premature for Jol to pull him so early on (despite the score). Was Erik hurt?
Eddie's Army
Don't know mate. I've a feeling it wsa a slight knock and the fat dutchman wasn't taking any chances.
Missed a cracker pal.
At last reid is showing the same class for us as he does for ireland.
But it keeps happening... every time carrick and mendes play in the centre together, they sit back and invite pressure onto us. loss of tainio lost our balance.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol is set to keep Anthony Gardner after a proposed move to Charlton fell through.
Gardner came close to leaving White Hart Lane earlier this summer with Charlton expressing an interest in signing him.
However, the move failed to materialise with reports suggesting the deal collapsed because of a failed medical.
Jol is happy to keep Gardner at the club and insists he will not be moving anywhere.
"He is experienced cover for Ledley King and we are pleased to have him back," said Jol.
"He is going nowhere else."
... with Huddlestone, Davenport, and even Pamarot and Stalteri all able to cover Ledley alongside Dawson, I'd have bet the house that Tony G's days at the Lane were numbered.
If Chelsea want to pay £32 million for a player like Essien who is worth no more than £6 million, then they can.
These French clubs love doing over Chelsea when it comes to transfer fee's. Look at what they did with Drogba. Hillarious.
To Dare Is To Do said that we lose our balance when Tainio goes off. How right that comment is!
Carrick doesn't have the option of playing the ball forward to his partner in midfield when Teemu's off. Mendes stays put and so Carrick needs passes the ball sideways.
When TT goes off, we do look static in the centre of midfield.
Very good observation
Does anyone here think that Marney can be an effective AM?
Unfort 4 me, I live in Canada, and we don't get Eurosport, so I must rely on web and the astute observations of fellow Spurs fans like you.. so thanks!
From your description of Mendes coming off, it sounded a bit like the Robbie Keane incident from last season, but then I could understand if Pedro was pissed over taking a tough knock in pre-season, especially since he's fighting for his place in the starting lineup!
What was Jol's reaction to PM's shirt toss?
;)
He has the potential to become what Stevie Gerrard is at Liverpool.
Go on then, I am ready for the slatting to begin.
