Spurs To Go Double Dutch?

Edgar Davids should sign for Spurs along with club and Dutch international team-mate Andy van der Meyde today.

We broke the news to you first that another signing may have been on the cards at Spurs and that both the new signings would be unveiled together.

Daniel Levy has had an offer of around £5.8 million accepted by Italian giant's Internazionale for the flying Dutchman.

Martin Jol was in talks with van der Meyde via telephone yesterday so as to wrap up the deal. Last night, talks were nearing conclusion between Jol and van der Meyde. If all goes well this morning, van der Meyde could be at Spurs Lodge for his medical by noon.

Everton also had a bid for him accepted by Inter, but the player is thought to have chosen us over any other team due to the ambition shown by the Tottenham management, squad and of course Martin Jol.

The talented winger, who scored a stunning volley against our rivals Arsenal in the 03/04 season of the Champions League, can play on either wing but does prefer the left flank. He is naturally two-footed, big, strong, has an abundance of pace, and coupled with his drive and skill make van der Meyde a threat to any oppositions defences.

Van der Meyde has found it difficult in Italy. He hasn't started as many games as he would have liked for the Milan club, which prompted him only last week to say that he would stay at Inter and battle for his place in the side.

Van der Meyde's main personality attribute is his will to succeed. Martin Jol knows the player from his days at Ajax and understands the players hunger. Along with Davids, Jol is building a team of born winners that have the experience needed and that 'winning mentality' that our young talented squad need in order to step up to the next level.

If all goes well, Spurs will unveil two true great Dutch players.

For the first time in our short history, the THBN Team are absolutely ecstatic with this news. We can't wait for this season to begin. I am sure that most of you also feel that way.

  7. As far as we know, there is no truth in the Wayne Bridge story.

    We have been told that Van der Meyde can definitely play just as well with both feet.

    He found it hard settling in Italy and didn't really get that many goals.

    We hope that the new surroundings of the Premiership, coupled with Jol's guidance will help him flourish (if he signs that is).

    I think they've used a great bit of nouse! Buy players that are top class, that aren't in the first team the year before the world cup!

    VDM has basically been given an offer to good to refuse, play first team football leading up to the world cup with a dutch team mate, under a dutch coach!

    If we achieve a top 6 this year, its going to be a great deal easier to secure other 'big-name' signings.

    In another vein, I am sure that Edgar Davids will prove to be a great signing. I have not seen another player, not even Steven Gerrard whom I greatly admire, who can match the pace and aggression with which he plays the game over the full 90 minutes. I think the Premiership will suit him down to the ground.
  22. You've got to hand it to DL and MJ...they're starting to form a good alliance when it comes to bidding for players. Davids IS the new Bergkamp when it comes to being a talisman for other players. If Kuyt signs as well, we could be regarded as the next Barcelona, circa Louis van Gaal era.

  23. If we get VDM along with Davids, it will be ahppy days at Spurs. We have spent a time building a young english core to the side and now we are moving for the experienced, class players that will move us on a level. Exactly the correct way to go.

    I must admit after Alan Sugar left (who we all disliked to a degree!) I initially thought that somehow DL & Enic had taken the club backwards. However, they were clearly biding their time to get the right system in place and it is great that this has now been achieved.

    Come on you Spurs.....I am expecting UEFA Cup Qualification at minimum.

    Have tickets for the middlesborough game and can't wait to see it!

  29. We stated yesterday that Martin Jol would not pay more than £7 million for Andy Johnson. That is still the case.

    Owen will not be coming to Spurs, not yet anyway. Who is to say that if we make a CL place next year, he may join.

    Rumours are that he will stay in Real. He would never join Man Utd. He played for Liverpool remember??

  37. Inter signed VDM for 5m so how has his value gone up after 2 disappointing seasons? He's not a very quick player for a winger, so not convinced he's the right signing for the club.

    We were told by the same source that informed us about Davids that we would break our transfer record.

    We were then given 3 players, Westley Sneijder, Dirk Kuyt and VDM.

    As neither of them break the £11 million mark, apart from Feyenoord's valuation of Kuyt, we rubbished the story in our comments yesterday.

  59. It intrigues me how pesimistic some spurs fans can be. Why should we not challenge for fourth place? Who else in the premiership has the quality and strenght in depth that we now seem to have? Chelscum, the arse? and maybe Man U. I think we'll be challenging for it with Liverpool and maybe Boro.

    About Van Der Meyde. Whoever said the fella is not quick has got to be joking. He is very very quick and powerful, i would agree that his final ball could be better, but fingers crossed Jol could sort that out. I thinks it a very good sign the fella wants to leave Inter and get first team football.
    About Stalteri. I have been very impressed with Kelly in Pre Season, but i woudl still think Stalteri will start at Right Back, he has been consistently good for Werder for a few seasons, gradually getting better and better, he is a very solid player, who rarely gets beaten one on one. Is similar to Tarricco in the way he keeps the ball.
    Well fingers crossed today for Davids and VDM.

    My back of a fag paper calculations estimate that we had/have a wad to spend. 5m (Atouba 1.5 - Davies 3.5) + FF' compensation (6-8) + monies allocated for the summer. So in theory could offer 11m + if we wanted to and as we are reported to have done for Baptista.

  70. I'd argue that by placing someone like VDM ahead of Ziegler or Reid, you stunt the growth of the latter. What good will Ziegler get from watching VDM? He needs to play in order to get exprience and reach his full potential!

    The highly rated player is rumoured to be Tottenham's much talked about "£10m swoop". However, the player's agent has previously insisted that he would only go to a team that could offer European football. Where have we heard that before?

With Davids (if we get him) and van der meyde (if we get him), we now have the largest midfield squad in the country to choose from - great for those on the pitch but if you're not playing it's going to hurt moral. I know you need competition for places but seeing a queue of people in the pecking order before you isn't going to be too nice.

    But who knows what the midfield's going to look like. I assume it will be - Davids and Carrick in the middle, van der meyde on the left and Tanio on the right.
    That leaves Reidy (no loss there)Davis, Routledge, Mendes, Lennon, Staltieri all over.

    Wonder if Davids and van der meyede have anything in their contracts saying if they are fit then they have to play?

    Kanoute WILL be leaving in the next 10 days as we are on the verge of signing Kuyt.

    Andy Johnson was only being watched in case Keane doesn't sign his contract, otherwise he is off to Newcastle or poss Everton.
    MJ is not silly and will not pay more than 7 million for AJ (I dont think he's worth 7 quid).

    Any new left back/striker may be purchased in the January transfer window when it is hoped a new Director of Football will have been appointed.

    Any other deals that might materialise will be young ones for the future.

  95. It's fair to say VDM plays on both the left and right wing, but one thing you should know. During a game there is no chance you will ever see him using his left foot. He is purely right footed. I always thought he had a lot of potential, but this is the one thing that always dissapointed me. He is predictable because he always put the ball onto the same foot... hope he proves me wrong though!

    Tottenham are poised to complete a sensational double Dutch swoop after having a bid for Andy van der Meyde accepted by Internazionale, having already captured Edgar Davids.

    The Italian club have consented to an offer from Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy and talks are at an advanced stage for flying winger van der Meyde.

    Davids came through his medical successfully on Thursday, but Tottenham held back on presenting the combative midfielder as they hope to present both players on Friday with van der Meyde already in the country as part of Inter's pre-season tour.

    Everton were also interested in the duo and hoped that the lure of UEFA Champions League football would swing things their way, but Martin Jol persuaded Davids to move to White Hart Lane and has used the Dutch connection to land van der Meyde.

  125. As a Spurs fan based in Amsterdam, I have watched vd Meyde since his breakthrough into the Ajax team. He had great potential but was one of the players that left before being able to completely establish themselves. Davids, Kluivert, Seedorf and the rest of that generation of players established themselves at Ajax first before moving on to successful and lucrative contracts in Spain and Italy, where they flourished. Andy vd Meyde left prematurely and has struggled. At lot of this will be to do with coping with the totally different culture and language whilst still learning the trade – too much at once. At Spurs language will not be an issue and the culture is more in line with that in Holland. He would be a fantastic signing for us and will blossom at WHL.

  170. We have a source inside White Hart Lane that gives out feeds of info. Some of that info is authorised by the board and some isn't.

    As regards WHL. We can tell you that Daniel Levy will hold talks with Haringey council in December.

    He has set them a deadline of restructuring the White Hart Lane area.

    It is very unlikely that they will do this as the costs could go into the billions.

    Unoffocial news is that the area near Picketts Lock will be purchased for our new ground.

    This will become the boards number 1 point to improve.

    Arnesen was away at many various sports academy's in Holland so as to report back with info on how our new academy should be structured.

    That has now been put on hold obviously.

    A new Sporting Director is needed, but we have had nothing through on who the club are after.

    We have been informed by the club that Daniel Levy is looking at a few options, but no names have been given.

    Davids does not need an eye test.
