Is Guti The Answer To The Attacking Midfielder We Need?

British tabloid, The Daily Mirror, has published another amazing story. This time, we are in for Real Madrid's attacking midfielder Guti and Manchester United's French striker Louis Saha.

Here is what the paper said:

"Spurs have turned their attention to Guti and seem to be at the head of the queue for a player who has been with Real all his career.

Spurs boss Martin Jol is also ready to make a cheeky bid to land Louis Saha on loan from Manchester United."

Can this be true? We have been linked with every player and his dog this season.

Would Real really sell for only £5 million? Would Guti join a team like Spurs, who are not in any European competitions?

The Saha story may have some substance to it though. I have heard the same story from another reliable source.

The fact is that Spurs are in talks with a club over an experienced player. We have no idea who the club or the player is.

Many of you (including me) would love to see Ajax star Westley Sneijder in our young team, but then again, Guti would do also.

Is this just another ploy to sell newspapers? I hope not. Everyone realises that we are in urgent need of not just an attacking midfielder, but an experienced one also. Does Guti fill that description? I'll let you decide.

  3. Unfortunately, I like most Spurs fans have now realised that this is all just press bull shit.... Obvioulsy the media have seen that we are trying to land the top players but the harsh reality is that we are still a 'developing' club.... yes we are building for the future but we still cannot land the big guns - which is why sadly we now take any transfer talk relating to our club with a pinch of salt - this is why the press are now having a bit of a laugh at our expense.

    Hey ho!!! ill still be there at the first game of the season full of optimism as always....

  9. in todays current transfer climate I feel that placing Guti in the £5mil bracket is reasonable, I wouldnt say he was a world class player by any stretch of the imagination. Wouldnt like to comment on the likeleyhood of this one coming off, would be a decent punt at 5mil though.

  12. Spurs are always linked like this as we would normally have the spondoolies to pull it off. Thats why the papers love it so. Guti may be an answer, good technical player although has an tendancy to winge alot on the field. Would he fit in with the team?

  16. guti is a quality player who just never got his break at real. Think he could do well in spurs. and i think given that he hasnt been able to hold a regular spot 5millionis reasonable deal for him

    he turned down arsenal a couple of years ago and has attracted attention from top italian sides.

  18. Westley Sneijder started off live in the Ajax team as a winger.

    Because he is naturally two-footed, he was played on both wings and did the job brilliantly.

    He is an amazing tackler, and so he was placed in the central midfield position where he has since become a great attacking midfielder. He has bite, pace and aggression.

    The Dutch call him 'The Pitbull' because he is very aggressive and passionate.

    He is also in the Dutch squad. Would come in at around £5 million.

    I prefer him over Guti anyday. Plus Jol knows him very well.

    The Saha story has come around because Ferguson wants to loan him to a club for a season.

    Kanoute or Keane (maybe both) will be sold. We will need another striker.

    Mido will do well this season. He looks sharp now that he is much fitter.

    We'll have to wait and see.

Hey we've been making money so far this close season, and chat of a minimum £20 million purse can't be far off the mark, but Spurs no longer have the "throw money at it" mentality, and though I would LOVE a big name, I think we will continue to make smaller waves, and show we are worthy of respect, instead of all the bollocks we have had to put up with, especially from the ( shite ) mirror.

  35. what about kieron dyer as an attacking midfielder? he moaned last season cos he was out wide, when he wanted to be in the centre and souness maybe willing to get rid of one of his other midfielders if he wont part with jenas, and we could get him for about £5/7 mil. His injury history leaves alot to be desired, but he's english, and spurs could be the club to re-ignite his career.

    Other than that Sneidjer seems like a good option for the left, but it worries me a little how short our team is becoming. And it is surprising that there arent more dutch players being linked with us all things considered. Still looking forward to the season regardless! COYS
  36. Agree poshspur, sneijder would be ideal. A better adition than guti because he does have that bit of 'bite' in his play. We know jol likes sneijder wich is why i dont think we will get him. I think we might of heard something by now.

I've seen Ajax play as well as the national side many times (Lived in Holland for 6 years) and hes another off the production line of talented skillful players that will end up at a big club and not us. I'd love to see him here , in fact Van der Vaart would have been ideal but he went to Germany?
    Ah well. I still think Sean Davies will shine this season, and we have Huddleston and Taino to prove themselves too. good competition.

    We've been linked with every player who "supported the club as a kid" or "once scored a goal at white hart lane" or has ever been in england! As much as i'd love to see Spurs net a Big name this summer you have to look at what we already have! all the talk is of a midfielder but we have Carrick, Mendes, Davis, Huddlestone, Tainio, Reid, Routledge, Lennon as well as those who i believe we'd be best of selling, loaning or just disowning: Jackson, Brown, Marney, El Hamdaoiu. These 58 players are competing for 4 spots across the middle of the park, 5 max. why not look for the sort of striker that would compliment Defoe up top and actually look like they want to be playing unlike Kanoute and to a lesser extent Mido.

    Given our current squad i'd line up with:

Think we should sell brown, davis, and buy a FAST left winger, even that wilhelmsson (or wateva his name was) so then we could let andy reid play in the attacking midfield role. Would rather see us buy a good attacking midfielder with experience - if only rui costa was 2 or 3 years younger.   79. First up, we need to concentrate on getting a new Sporting Dirctor, let Jol and Levy get back doing what they're paid to do, not covering for Arnesen. Disappointed as I am in Arnesen, he definitley lifted the club and we're better off for having had him. We need to make sure we replace him with someone equally as good if not better. Let the new Sporting Director find players and negotiate transfers. I don't think we need an AttMid, Plenty of attacking strength out wide, solidity in the middle. I'm expecting Taino to score a few from midfield, also think Reid will be approaching double figures. Only need to buy someone else if we sell any of our first team. Keep Robbie Keane too.

  87. Like most comments, this is probably just another taloid story. That said, I think he is certainly a name to get the fans excited - but I am not certain that he fits the profile of the squad that Jol is building or indeed that Guiti himself will be able to adapt to the English Premiership. There's no doubting his quality - but we have all seen far too many players of his type, coming with a big reputation and costing a lot of money but not being able to adapt to our league.

    I do not doubt though that an attacking midfielder is needed. I am not sure about Sean Davis and his infury problems. I agree that Saha is better than Kanoute any day and although Keane has flashes of brilliance - he is not an asset to the squad. I remain to be convince by Mido and await to see his performances.

  109. Absolutely delighted that Atouba has gone - never understood what the management saw in this player. There are at the moment too many silly names being bounded around as potential signings - most of whom are never going to come - even if they did simply do not fit the profile of the squad that Jol is building and I doubt would be able to adapt to the riggers of the Premiership.

    The Spurs do however need an attacking midfielder - but its not Guiti. I would be pleased to see the back of Kanoute and Robbie Keane, but that would leave us short of strikers. Saha would be a good loan signing - Crouch and Andy Johnson are one season wonders and should stay in the Championship.

    Jonesy - you can't say does anyone know anything about football - then follow with the sentence Andy Johnson had a good season, he's a good player, but not world class. Not world class - without his penalties he would have struggled to hit double figures last season, he's struggling to be Prem class - if Defoe took as many penalties as him he would have been top goalscorer in prem, and to be honest, he only played well for the first half of the season.
