Arnesen - "Tottenham Couldn't Attract Big Players"

Frank Arnesen, our departing Sporting Director, gave an interview with The News of the World.

Arnesen said the following:

"I have been at a club (Tottenham) where we were always at the back of the queue.

"Chelsea and Arsenal were always at the front of the queue signing the big players. I didn't like that.

"I always wanted to be the one signing the big players and I know that joining Chelsea will now give me that chance."

Is this guy being serious?

Anyone who is anyone knows who the top players in football are. Why would we have spent £600,000 a year on Arnesen’s contract if that’s what he was supposed to be doing....."signing the big players".

He was signed as our Sporting Director because he had contacts all over the world that would let on to him about an up-and-coming star, not already established players! His other main duties were to create a continental youth academy and training centre.

We all know that the likes of Adriano, Shevchenko, Steven Gerrard, etc wouldn’t come to the Lane. If he thought that he would be the one bringing them to Spurs, then all I have to say is that Chelsea have just handed us £8 million (reportedly) for an absolute idiot.

Chelsea can’t even attract the above names mentioned!

If this is the real Frank Arnesen, then good riddance!

  12. Well i dont agree at all with you all. Arnesen allready showed that he can attract players in absolute top quality like Ronaldo for psv and so on.

    There is nothing like a undiscovered supertalent today for free, there are only supertalents who will get super players, and the job is to spot them and sign em.

    So stop whining about the fact that you have lost the greatest youth finder out there.

    P.S im not a Chelsea fan so thats not why i think he is great.

  24. Jol seems to have very nice things to say about Arnesen.

    I think we shouldnt be too bitter about him. Ziegler, El, Defendi and a few others are quite decent so far. If good potentials can easily become the finished articles in one year then other people would have found them first.

    Good luck to Arnesen. All our support is for Jol and team now.

Arnesen is having a go at us, trying to wind us up, but if you look at our club over the past few years and his tenure at the club, you'll see he was right, we have not had big signings, and I dont think its because we are an unatractive club to come and play for, i just think we have not been paying the big amounts that are needed to get the best talent to come to the lane, but now we have no excuse, beacuase we have got the money, with the possibility of getting even more cash if we offload atouba, Kanouter and possibly keane, all ok players but not good enough for the next level.

    If we get some high class players at the lane then we will rise.

    And all of you saying that we dont want high priced signings at the lane, thats just silly, if we didnt have big signings and big wages, there would have been no waddle, no Lineker, no Gascoigne, no Ardiles or Villa, no Klinsmann, we need those kind of palyers at the lane to bring back the glorry days we have waited too long for.

  27. i dont think it matters to the big players or thier clubs about spurs , like any footballer i think they want high wages and theier club wants a big fee,

    I have idea who wants to come to spurs, but if levy is to prove himself to us then he needs to convince the players to come here and part of that involves outbidding the competition.

    If the rumours about baptista are true then if they were to offer 15mil for him, do you think he would turn it down, i dont think so. I'm not saying we should pay that much for baptista but if there is someone out there that is a proven high class talent then we should outbid the competition, thats the only solution. If we get oen of thes type of player then others will follow, so will the success which will bring in funds to maintain the success.

    Do you remember how many people wanted Gascoigne before we got him, and also lineker?? We got them because we forked out the dosh, and as far as i'm concerned it was worth every penny.
  28. Why do people keep saying Kanoute, Keane and Mido aren't good enough for the next level when they clearly are! The players we should be looking to offload, which it would appear we are doing, and replace would be Pamarot, Atouba, Gardner, Davis (injuries), Bunjevcevic, Brown etc

    Just because Kanoute and Keane seem to have a couple of issues with things doesn't mean they aren't good enough and just because a player tries hard, eg Brown certainly doesn't mean he is!

    Oh and as far as I can tell Arnesen signed alot of Shit none of whom looked as good as Ricketts who let go for free! Why?

He was supposed to make us one of the clubs that would attract all those big players again. He of all people would know that was not going to happen over night when taking the job.     "Frank Arnesen wishes to make it clear that comments attributed to him in one of Sunday’s newspapers are totally unfounded, are not direct quotes from him and are inaccurate and misleading."

    If this is the case, I take back what I said.

To be honest I don't think that when Frank said 'big signings' he was referring to the established big signings, such as Davids, Figo, Shevchenko... etc. I think he was probably referring to the up and coming big signings, such as Reyes, Fabregas, Robben, Baptista(?)... This is judging by the players that he did bring to Tottenham, who are great youngsters, but not the greatest.

    Those are the kind of players that Frank will be bringing in at Chelscum - not the Zidane's...etc

    However, I have to express an extreme dissapointment in Frank, particularly after the club announced that Frank would carry on doing his duties (till september) in a professional manner. He has definitely damaged the clubs name through his actions and words (with that 'back of the queue' bollocks).

  45. frank may not have said it, but we all know its the truth, who has come to spurs in the last few years? we have been left behind by arsenal, man u, liverpool and fuckin cheski, we used to compete with these teams but now we're just another team that poses no real threat to them.

    If we dont sign the big boys we're going to be left further and further behind.

    Yes I know we have a good squad at the moment, and its one for the futire but we dont have those 2-3 key elements that will lift us up again, according to Jol he's trying to bring them in, so fingers crossed. We need a scoring midfielder and two new strikers, sell atouba, gardner, Bunji, kanoute and Kean.   60. if we get him which we wont, who knows what his wages will be, you are plucking a figure out of thin air, but lets say he does get 60k, and other players want the same, we will pay them with the success that his and their efforts on the pitch will bring, succes has financial reward, and its not an impossible balance sheet to keep, look at the gooners, their players have huge wages, but ther are paid without jeopardising the club, the only reason they were in debt was because of ashburton grove.

    Arsenal didnt pay Henry, Vieira et all 50-60k straight away. They were given a massive raise only after they had proven their quality and won the EPL.

    If we get to CL with the current set of players then they deserve higher wages automatically, or at least huge one-time bonuses. There is already CL money to back it up.

    My point is, we'd better get a real good big name signing who will deliver us CL and not destroy the team spirit. Otherwise its not worth the punt.

  78. I was going to write an article on who you all think we should buy, but after reading all the comments, I don't think I need to.

    FACT: We need an attacking midfielder.

    FACT: Not coming are: Van Der Vaart, D'Alessandro, Van Bommel, Vieira, Pires, Aimar.

    Who should join? I have no idea. Malbranque for me is like taking a step nowhere. He doesn't offer much, plus he's a bit of a sicknote and way too expensive at £4 million.

    We should have gone for Figo. Pay the guy £70,000 p/week. Defoe, King, Robbo & the rest will get similar wages to him after they have won half of what he has won.

    Ask Defoe if he would rather have Malbranque in the side who would be on the same wage, or if he would prefer Figo who would be on nearly double what Defoe was on, but offered real ambition and a realistic chance of getting us into a 5th (maybe 4th) spot.

    Jermain would choose Figo over Steed anyday.

    So it does come down to the money.

    When we signed Klinsmann, he earned double what our top player (Sheringham) was earning. Did Teddy mind? No way! He saw that the club was moving in the right direction, as will our current crop of players.

    I just hope a player is signed soon. A player that will lift the entire squad.

    We need an experienced player. Jol even said so himself in an interview yesterday.

    Many of you say that Figo has had it. What a load of Rubbish! Rafa Benitez is Europes best manager, and he thinks Figo has still a big part to play, hence going after him.

    Jol & Levy need to spend. If we have a reported £25 million, spend it on 2 players. It's a risk, but then again, nobody got anywhere without taking those kind of big risks.
