Scouting in Brazil

Scouting in Brazil

Brazilian-striker-Pedro
Pedro may well make the Brazil squad for the upcoming friendlies.

Tottenham scour the world for up and coming talent and one player that will be on our radar is Brazilian rising talent Pedro.

PEDRO

Pedro (Guilherme Abreu dos Santos) is a 21-year-old (22 next June) striker for Fluminense. The Rio de Janeiro born centre-forward is one of the top goal scorers in the Brazilian championship with 9 goals and 2 assists in 13 games.

He has also scored 1 goal in 2 Copa Sudamericana games. He has mobility, and an ability to protect the ball which caught the eye of his coaches and hastened his rise.

Brazilian media have reported that Italian clubs AC Milan and Roma are both interested, while Spanish newspaper Marca says he is a top target for Sevilla.

Plenty of interest ahead of the first concrete offer for Pedro of £7.57 million (€8.5m), from French side Bordeaux, which has been turned down by the Brazilian side. Fluminense own 50% of his economic rights and say he has a release clause of £44.53 million (€50m).

Reports suggest he will be offered an improved contract, his current deal runs until July 2021.

Scouting, One To Watch, Qatar deal

Scouting, One To Watch and the Qatar deal which sees Harry Winks rehabilitating over there.

Harry-Winks-recovering-in-Qatar
Harry Winks recovering in Qatar

Spurs have sent a scout to the RB Salzburg vs Lazio UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie tonight report Austrian online sports portal LAOLA1 TV, whose headquarters are in Vienna.

One To Watch

Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are all watching 19-year-old (20 in June) Eberechi Eze, the QPR forward.

We were once again at the game against Norwich City, reported the Daily Mirror, a game QPR won 4-1.

West London Sport report that he oozes class. Rather like Kyle Walker-Peters, he won the Man of the Match award for his first start for manager Ian Holloway after some impressive substitute displays.

Harry Winks

Regular readers will remember me reporting Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff visiting a rehabilitation clinic in Qatar and Spurs signing an agreement with them.

Well, Harry Winks is now in Qatar undergoing rehabilitation for his ongoing ankle injury, the one he suffered that ended his season, last season. It has completely scuppered his chances of going to the World Cup this summer and he will be like a new signing when he returns next season.

Spurs Ask About French Under-21 Centre-back Mukiele

Spurs Have Asked About The Availability Of French Under-21 Right-back/Centre-back Nordi Mukiele

Spurs-Ask-About-French-Under-21 Centre-back-Mukiele
Pochettino is regularly having Nordi Mukiele watched

Tottenham Hotspur are regularly scouting 20-year-old (21 in November) Montpellier centre-back Nordi Mukiele, a rising star in Ligue 1 and are reported by Le 10 Sport to have made initial enquiries about his situation.

First the basics, he is 1.86m tall (6ft 1in in proper money) and under contract until 2022,he moved to Montpellier from second-division side Stade Laval for £1.35 million in January 2017

He is a French Under-21 international (capped twice) who is also qualified to play for DR Congo.

This season he has played at centre-back 21 times and at right-back 12 times, with 1 game at right midfield. That suggests he has the adaptability that Mauricio Pochettino likes. Transfermarkt place his current valuation at £7.2 million.

Pochettino likes adaptable players because they cover several positions, but also because it keeps the individual involved and a part of the group. The more active the member of a squad the better generally, without over working of course.

Olympique Marseille are also keeping an eye on him and are said to be wanting to make a move in the summer. He played against them in a 0-0 draw last Sunday and by all accounts had an excellent game. Right-footed, he played left sided centrally in a back five.

Reports in France suggest players and coaches are tipping big things for Mukiele and suggestions over here say Manchester City and Chelsea are taking an interest. He is powerful and quick, is making waves having never played in the system he is playing in today.

Montpellier boss Michel Der Zakarian, a former defender praises him.

"He's got a lot of potential. He's an intelligent player, he's good in the air, reads the game well and is comfortable with the ball."

The defender admits he isn't the finished article and that he has lapses in concentration that he is working on with the help of his 40-year-old captain, Vitorino Hilton, beside him. He is strong in the air, comfortable with the ball at his feet and has all the attributes of a modern day full-back/wing-back.

Montpellier sit 6th in the French table with the second best defensive record in the division. They have conceded only 26 goals in 32 games, PSG (1st) have conceded 22 goals, while Monaco (2nd) and Amiens SC (13th) have conceded 34 goals.

Pochettino, Champions League Revenue and Scouting Round-Up

Mauriccio Pochettino, UEFA Champions League Revenue and Spurs Scouting Round-Up

Mauricio Pochettino has disappointed all the anti-Levy folk who want to blame someone, by declaring that Tottenham will not buy trophies,we will earn what we win. Proper football values.

"We’re not going to buy trophies, we’re going to deserve trophies. The players are so happy. The worst thing in life is to compare yourself with others.”

Champions League Revenue

Champions League revenue for 2017/18:
Chelsea €65m - £57.4m
Manchester City €63m - £55.63m
Tottenham Hotspur €61m - £53.87m
Liverpool €56m - £49.45m
Manchester United €39m - £34.44m
Celtic €32m - £28.26m

Celtic got 10% of UK TV pool for qualifying for Group Stages.
Manchester United qualified via UEFA Europa League so received no money from the first half of the TV pool money.

Scouting

Spurs have sent scouts to watch Red Bull Salzburg (Austria) vs Borussia Dortmund in their UEFA Europa League clash tonight say ESTADIO Deportivo.

Stuttgart have made it clear that £30m Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool summer transfer window target 21-year-old (22 on 28 March) Benjamin Pavard will not be leaving the Bundesliga side in the coming months. (Bild)

Tottenham Hotspur and PSG have joined Manchester City in the race to sign Sporting starlet Rafael Leao (Record).

If we have been watching the Sporting Clube de Portugal B 18-year-old (19 in June) forward for a while, which we have, how are we only just joining the race? Always amazes me how things are reported. Were City on their own following the Portugal Under-21 player, or talking to representatives? No. So other teams are not just joining the race, they have been a part of 'the race'.

Scouting Trips - 6 Players

Spurs doing plenty of scouting

Spurs-scouting-Ralston

Spurs continue to monitor the progress of 19-year-old (20 in November) Celtic and Scotland Under-21 right-back Anthony Ralston, who is under contract until 2022 and we following young Georgian talent, but who else have we been scouting lately?

Spurs Scouting Trip - Carles Aleñá

Spurs sent a scout to watch Cordoba vs Barcelona B on February 4th. Last season Tottenham were linked to 20-year-old (21 next January) Barcelona B and Spanish Under-19 international central midfielder Carles Aleñá.

We were interested in signing him and at the time he had a buyout cause of £2.64 million (€3m), however, he signed a new three-year contract. Barcelona also inserted another two year option and a £66.02 million (€75m) buyout clause.

Born in Mataró, Spain he stands 1.80m (5ft 11in) tall, he made his debut against Celtic last season. he played 3 games in LaLiga and scored a goal.

Spurs Scouting Trip - Jean Seri and Malang Sarr

Tottenham, Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus, PSG, Chelsea, Marseille and Inter Milan were among 20 clubs who sent scouts to the Allianz Riviera to watch the Nice v Lokomotiv Moscow UEFA Europa League tie.

Despite reports, such as the one recently in the Sun, inside sources say Manchester United are not interested in 20-year-old (21 in July) Ivory Coast and Nice central midfielder Jean Seri....but they continue to watch Nice. Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked with him.

If his international teammate Serge Aurier could just have a word in his shell like for us as his contract ends in 2019.

At the same game clubs were also watching his teammate and French Under-21 international 19-year-old (20 next January) centre-back Malang Sarr, whose contract runs out in 2021.

Spurs Scouting Trip - Issa Diop and Alban Lafont

Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Arsenal watched Toulouse lose 1-0 to PSG recently. Suggestions are the clubs were watching French Under-21 international and Toulouse centre-back 21-year-old (22 next January) Issa Diop, who is under contract until 2020.

There is also interest in French Under-20 and Toulouse goalkeeper Alban Lafont, who is under contract until 2020 and particularly interests Arsenal.

Spurs officially ask about Werder Bremen midfielder Delaney

SCOUTING TALK

German daily newspaper SportBild are reporting that Thomas Delaney will probably be leaving Werder Bremen nxt summer for the Premier League and that Tottenham Hotspur are watching him.

The 26-year-old (27 next September) Danish international (he has 19 full international caps, scoring 4 goals for his country) central midfielder is said to be returning to top form and they say it is no secret he wants to move to England. He has already turned down Burnley and Everton have shown an interest.

Although he is under contract until 2021 he has indicated to the club that he would like to talk to clubs from the Premier League and we are in a position better than most to know all about him with his international teammate Christian Eriksen in our ranks.

Werder Bremen have reported that Spurs have officially registered an interest and been asked to be kept up to date with any developments or availability. SportBild suggest he could leave for a figure around £13.21 million (€15m - AUS$22.39m - US$17.95m).

Spurs scouting Golovin

SCOUTING TALK

Tottenham sent a scout to watch CSKA Moscow beat Benfica in the first game of the group stages of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday in Portugal. The Russians came from 1-0 down at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon to win 2-1.

This is not the first time we have watched them, we also saw them win their qualifier against Young Boys of Switzerland back in August. The speculation is that we were watching 21-year-old (22 next May) Russian international (he has 15 full international caps, scoring 2 goals) central midfielder Aleksandr Golovin.

Golovin is under contract until 30 June 2018 and his boot sponsor is our shirt sponsor Nike, he uses the Nike Mercurial Vapor XI FG shoe. The right-footer has scored 2 goals, with a further 1 assist in the opening 9 Russian Premier Liga games.

He can play on the right or left or as a defensive midfielder and in fact, has done so already this season. Pochettino likes versatile players and he fits the bill with a good allround game that lacks crossing ability and aerial ability, not essential requirements of a central midfielder.

This season he has a pass completion of 89% in his domestic league and 76% in the UEFA Champions League game we watched. he has won 50% of his duels (aerial, tackles, take-ons) as opposed to 30.77% in the UCL game.

Unknown by Spurs fans, he is considered one of the best playmakers in Russia, being the creative lynchpin for both club and country. His maturity has helped his side win a League title and seen him pick up a winners medal already.

He was a part of the 2013 UEFA U-17 European Championships winning team and earlier this summer it was being reported that Arsenal were very close to signing him, but he remains at CSKA and playing the UEFA Champions League football that our junior neighbours can't offer.

Read more about him at Russian Football News

No doubt we will be keeping an eye on him for the remainder of the UEFA Champions League group stages.

Spurs Scouted Celtic right-back on 5th September

TOTTENHAM TALK

Anthony-Ralston

Tottenham Hotspur and Everton sent scouts to watch the Scotland Under-21 side beat the Holland Under-21 team 2-0 on Tuesday 5th September at Paisley 2021 Stadium, Paisley in the UEFA EURO U-21 First qualifying round.

The scouts were watching 18-year-old (19 in November) right-back Celtic Anthony Ralston who was making his debut for the national Under-21 side after appearing 6 times for the Scotland Under-19 team.

He has played 4 games this season, 2 in the Scottish Premiership, 1 in the second leg of a UEFA Champions League Qualifying round tie against FC Astana. he came as a substitute and played 33 minutes on the right of midfield.

He was on the bench for the first leg and also for the third qualifying round game at home against Norwegian side Rosenburg from Trondheim, who have won the Eliteserien 24 times.

There is speculation that he could be picked tonight to play in the first game of the group stages of the UEFA Champions League against french giants Paris Saint-Germain, where he would probably have to mark Brazilian star and former Barcelona striker, Neymar.

Spurs Scouting

SCOUTING

The UEFA European Under-19 Championship took place in Georgia recently and were won by England who beat Portugal 2-1 in the final.

there were 80 clubs scouting the tournament and we had at least three scouts there including our former chief scout Ian Broomfield who was working part-time for us.

The six day Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup started yesterday involving 340 teams from around the world, including England, Scotland, Finland, Germany, France, Canada and America, who have come to Ireland for the tournament. There are also 28 women's football teams taking part in their own tournament.

All the major clubs in the UK will be present during the week to scout talent, which naturally includes Tottenham Hotspur. That has been confirmed by Michael Hutton Chairman of Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup who gets reports from hotels.

“Hotels are reporting to me more than ever over the past few years and especially this year, that the major clubs in Britain are booking scouts into hotels.
“Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Sunderland, Sheffield United, Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Aberdeen and many others - will each have several scouts in the city, very much focusing on what Irish talent is available.
“More and more clubs are looking at the success of Irish players with Premier League club and are determined to find future stars – thereby saving themselves millions of pounds that their clubs cannot afford.
“More professional clubs are crossing the Irish Sea and it is particularly pleasing to see present Celtic manager – Brendan Rodgers, a former player within the Derry & District Youth Football – identify with the event by encouraging Celtic U14 team to compete.”

Former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane, John O’Shea, Paddy McNair, Darron Gibson, Shay Given, Paddy McCourt, Daniel Lafferty, James McClean and Shane Duffy have all been discovered ans signed after appearing in this tournament.

The tournament sees Under-9, Under-10, Under-11, Under-12, Under-13, Under-14, Under-15, Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Girls under-11, Girls Under-13 and Ladies sides taking part.

While England were winning the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the first FIFA trophy since the 1966 World Cup win over Germany at the Old Wembley stadium, Spurs chief scout Steve Hitchin was at the Toulon Under-20 tournament that England also won.

He took in games involving England, Wales and France with particular interest in 20-year-old (21 next April)Welsh centre-back Cian Harries. he went on trail to Liverpool in January but they sent him back to Coventry City where he remains after their relegation from League One (they finished 23rd) to League Two.

Harries played 8 league One games last season and is under contract until 2020.

Tottenham Hotspur will take on Italian Champions and UEFA Champions League runners-up Juventus at Wembley on August 5th in a pre-season friendly.

The game takes place a week before we kick off the new season and two weeks before the Italians start there season.

New European scout appointed at Spurs plus Rodriguez not joining Man United

TRANSFER AND SCOUTING TALK

As expected, all the talk of James Rodriguez going to Manchester United is simply Real Madrid feeding stories to the press to try and generate interest in buying him. Real Madrid overpaid for him in the first place so selling him might be problematical.

#MUFC not after James Rodriguez, other forwards they're pursuing. Real trying to create a market for Rodriguez hence endless links

Hull City's European scout has now joined the Tottenham Hotspur scouting staff ans is now performing the same role in Europe for us. The overhaul of our scouting system continues.

He had two spells at Sussex coastal side Hastings Town to cut his teeth as it were before moving further along the coast to Brighton and Hove Albion, now a Premier League side thanks to their promotion under former Spurs right-back Chris Houghton.

He was first team coach at Brighton, then reserve team manager then assistant first team manager and finally head of recruitment. He left Brighton in November 2009 and went on to work in recruitment for Sunderland, then \Hull City and now for us at Tottenham Hotspur.

Are Spurs one of the 20 clubs scouting Haidara

SCOUTING TALK

Image result for Amadou Haidara

Amadou Haidara is a 19-year-old (20 in January) central midfielder from Mali who currently plays for the Austrian club Liefering on a season-long loan from FC Red Bull Salzburg.

Apparently 20 big European clubs sent scouts to watch him play for the FC Red Bull Salzburg Under-19 side recently against Spanish side Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Youth League quarter-final. He was by all accounts the star of the game and this came just 24 hours after he had turned out on international duty for the Mali Under-20 side.

Whether we were one of those clubs is unclear but it would be no surprise given our transfer policy of buy young and develop. We are linked with the top young talent and Haidara clearly possess potential for so many clubs to be watching him.

He has played 19 Erste Liga games, scoring one goal with a further three assists. In the UEFA Youth League he has played 4 games scoring two goals. He is under contract until 2021 and scored 2 goals in 7 games for the Mali Under-17 side.

Scout sent to watch Czec Republic striker Schick

SCOUTING TALK

I understand Tottenham Hotspur sent a scout to Italy to watch the Genoa versus Sampdoria Serie A game on Saturday that ended in a 1-0 away win for the Marco Giampaolo managed side. It was a local derby as Sampdoria are based in Genoa.

We were not alone at the game, Premier League rivals Manchester City had a scout there, Italian sides Juventus, Roma and Inter Milan has scouts present, German side Borussia Dortmund and French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais also sent representatives.

It is though we were all watching 21-year-old (22 next January) Czech Republic centre-forward Patrik Schick. The young Sampdoria striker stands 1.87 m (6 ft 1 in) tall and has been capped three times and scored one goal for his country, having progressed right through from the Under-16 side.

He was formerly at Sparta Prague, where he began his professional career against Teplice in a 3-1 defeat on 3 May 2014. He had a spell on loan at Bohemians Praha 1905 (previously named FC Bohemians Praha) the following season making 27 appearances and scoring 8 goals.

Once his loan spell ended he was transferred to the Italian side 13 days later for a fee of £3.48 million ((€4m - AUS$5.62m - US$4.26m). In 25 games since, although his time on the pitch only totals 935 minutes in all competitions (Serie A 22 games and Coppa Italia 3 games). He has managed to net 9 goals (7 in the league, plus 2 assists), a goal on average every 104 minutes. Schick has only started 6 games, 5 in the league, 1 in the Cup.

He is decent in the air but needs to work on holding onto the ball, essential if playing as a lone striker. It is a skill he will learn with practice.

Big changes in our scouting set up

SCOUTING TALK

Image result for paul mitchell tottenham

London-based journalist Greg Stobbart revealed that Paul Mitchell has now left Spurs, he is on gardening leave, while the 'Head of Elite Potential Identification, David Webb, has also left the club after being sacked.

Spurs turned down Ousmane Dembele & Alexander Isak for fraction of eventual fees. New chief scout Steve Hitchen now calling the shots.

More changes to THFC's recruitment staff. Paul Mitchell now gone & David Webb left role as 'head of elite potential identification' last wk

David Webb - he sacked him last week!

Eg have signed Dembele a year before his move to BVB for £1.5m but dallied and then wanted to put him in the U18s

Clearly Webb has been identifying the players because we have been linked with making moves for a lot of young talent the other big clubs have also been after. We haven't been too successful signing them though and signings like Vincent Janssen, Clinton N'Jie and Georges-Kevin N'Koudou clearly haven't developed the potential we believe they have.

New appointment Steve Hitchen seems to have taken on some of the the responsibility of Paul Mitchell's role with Mitchell now searching for another job with our blessing. The scouting set up that Mitchell put in place seems to be being dismantled and rebuilt. Our Iberian scout is no more, our German scout is no more, our Belgian and Dutch scout is no more and our veteran chief scout Ian Broomfield left in December

Hitchen now reports to Spurs' football committee of Pochettino, chairman Daniel Levy and head of coaching and development John McDermott, who was given the responsibility for all sides below the first team. That doesn't mean Pochettino has nothing to do with them or no input, just that McDermott is responsible and reports back to the committee.

There will be further appointments to come but what roles everyone will be performing and their exact responsibilities will remain a little unclear. It isn't a side of the club that gets much publicity.
