VAR Farce - Who is refereeing games now?
Who is refereeing games now?
VAR, or the implementation of it has become a complete joke. The referee is no longer in charge of the game.
Iran got an absolutely farcical penalty, clearly, the Panama referee, who Egypt complained to FIFA about, doesn't even know the rules of the game, he could be on the expert's panel with that ability.
In addition Ronaldo was issued a yellow card when VAR can only check red cards, so they can only give a yes or no on that, they can't start issuing yellow cards or we are on the path to having every decision checked, which was almost the case in the Portugal game anyway. The referee was simply out of his depth.
Every time a referee goes to the TV screen he changes his decision, even if his decision was correct and in accordance with the laws of the game in the first place. The referee has decided who will finish 1st and 2ndin the Group and their next opponents.
The officials have been terrible in this World Cup, Germany are only in the World Cup thanks to the referee who refused to award a blatant penalty to Sweden. That tells you FIFA are involved, especially when you consider they appointed a Polish referee to help them.
Poles, Austrian, Turks, they all play for Germany. Why wasn't there an African or South American referee and why aren't the best referees at the tournament as they are supposed to be?
We also now have players hitting the floor and writhing in agony when hardly touched. Why? Well, they want to get VAR involved to get an opponent sent off so our spectacle is being ruined by cheating and pathetic refereeing.
How can you introduce a system in the biggest tournament in the world when you don't know how to use it properly? The referee on the field and off the field must be signing from the same hymn sheet, you can't have the pair of officials officiating the same game in different ways.
At the moment the referee in a room in Moscow is running the game and the referee on the field is his puppet. Control must be given back to the official on the pitch, all officials must be from the same country and appropriate officials appointed to a game, not officials from a neighbouring country.

VAR can only bring something to the referee's attention. I think you'll find that the VAR official brought the Ronaldo offence to the referee's attention as a potential red card. It was the referee on the pitch who, after seeing what was a deliberate and quite strong blow to the other player's face, decided to award just a yellow. A mistake in my view, and not compatible with the laws of the game. I 'm strongly of the belief it should have been a red. Nevertheless the mistake was from the referee and not the VAR.
Many VAR instances are quoted as mistakes but they are decided by the referee himself, after having the evidence laid out before him more clearly than he may have seen in real time. There have been mistakes made - certainly. But ultimately by the referees. This was always the case, but now at least they have more opportunity to see the evidence away from the pressure of the players.
