Creative midfielder like Gomes a better choice than Dembélé

TRANSFER TALK

The goalless draw at Wembley against Swansea City on Saturday once again highlighted the need for creative midfielders who can make that final pass into the box to fashion a shooting chance.

People are looking to the exclusion of Mousa Dembélé, who would have actually made no difference. Swansea parked the bus, Dembélé doesn't pass through players in the final third, he dribbles past men deeper and passes. With the Swansea defence not coming out there was nobody for him to beat, his strength wouldn't have been needed.

He has played against packed defences, ask yourself how many chances he has created against them? It is OK looking good, but as I say, how many chances has he created or how many gaps has he created for someone else to create a chance as a result of him dribbling past someone on the edge of the area.

Those shouting that it was a wrong team selection are wrong and take no account of the fact that players are not robots. We already know Dembélé will never be 100% fit again, we already know his game time is managed, he is taken off most games to be replaced. He is a superb player, but that doesn't make him suited to every game.

What we need is additional creative options. Barcelona midfielder André Gomes provides that option. As I wrote previously, he is looking to leave the Spanish club to get more game time and they are open to selling him. The press I now see are starting to speculate again suggesting we are preparing an offer. We have already made an offer, he has been offered to us.

It isn't so much a case of preparing an offer as simply having further discussions are reaching a mutually agreeable arrangement. other clubs will want him though so it isn't cut and dried that he'll come to Spurs.

One player who won't is Isco who has duly signed a new contract at Real madrid after getting more game time. That was always his preferred option so wasn't unexpected.
