André Gomes, the nearly deal

TRANSFER TALK

André Gomes, the 24-year-old (25 next July) Barcelona midfielder was very close to becoming a Spurs player and the influence of Mauricio Pochettino in convincing him Tottenham was the place to come, was crucial to the deal.

Barcelona have a glut of midfielders after buying former Tottenham player Paulinho and tried everything they could to sign Philippe Coutimho from Liverpool. Had he arrived then they would have let Gomes go, but with that deal eventually failing, the Spanish side pulled the plug on the Tottenham deal.

It would have been a season-long loan, so we could ensure the Portuguese international was going to be successful in the Premier League, with an option to buy next summer. He wanted regular football ahead of the World Cup next summer so West Ham were a;so a realistic possibility before Pochettino convinced him Spurs were the better option.

His situation we have to be re-examined in Jnauary.
