Spurs scout Ukrainian Cup Final - not Yarmolenko, Brazilian winger Marlos

SCOUTING TALK

Marlos

Tottenham sent a scout to the Ukranian Cup Final between Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday 17 May at the Metalist Stadium, Kharkiv where 25,000 people saw Shakhtar Donetsk lift the trophy.

Shakhtar Donetsk won 1-0 despite missing a penalty in the 8th minute. Marlos made up for his error in the 81st minute when he scored the winner.

Spurs sent a scout there, almost certainly there to watch 27-year-old (28 in October) Dynamo Kiev number 10 and captain Andriy Yarmolenko, at least that is what the report from Ukraine suggests.

Given his age and the fact he would have to adapt to a new language, a new culture, a higher standard and different style of football, it might be that we sent a scout there to watch someone else, someone younger.

Signing Yarmelenko at his age would be too big a risk to take, Yevhen Konoplyanka flopped in Spain and was loaned out to Schalke of the Bundesliga after just a season at Sevilla. he is 27-years-old (28 in September).

The report suggests Stoke City and Everton were watching Yarmelenko and are both interested in signing him but that Spurs may have been watching Taison, Marlos, Ismaily, Jaroslav Rakytskyy and Taras Stepanenko.

Taison is a 29-year-old (30 in June) Brazilian international (he has 1 cap) right-footed, left-sided midfielder whose contract runs until 31 December this year. He has scored 5 goals with 7 assists in 22 Premier Liga games (10 goals, 10 assists in 38 games in all competitions).

Marlos is a 23-year-old (24 in June) Brazilian left-footed, right-sided midfielder under contract until 2019. He has scored 3 goals and had 4 assists in 27 Premier Liga games, as well as scoring the winner in the Cup Final (7 goals in all competitions, 10 assists).

Ismaily is a 27-year-old (28 in January) Brazilian left-back under contract until 2021. he scored 2 goals and had 5 assists in 28 Premier Liga games.

Jaroslav Rakytsky is a 27-year-old (28 in August) Ukranian international (he has 44 caps scoring 4 goals) left-footed centre-back who is under contract until the end of June 2022. He had 4 assists in 20 Premier Liga games.

Taras Stepanenko is a 27-year-old (28 in August) Ukranian international (he has 37 caps scoring 3 goals) left-footed defensive midfielder under contract until the end of June 2020. he scored 1 goal in 26 Premier Liga games.

From that list, all bar Marlos are too old to take a risk on them adapting to the Premier League when we are expecting to challenge for a title again and make a better fist of the UEFA Champions League.
