Schalke want at least £17.06m for Spurs and Liverpool midfield target Meyer

TRANSFER TALK

Bundesliga side Schalke 04 want at least £17.06 million (€20m - AUS$28.27m - US$21.2m) for 21-year-old (22 in September) Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool target Max Meyer according to a report in German newspaper Bild.

He isn't close to extending his deal with the German side making a summer transfer look highly likely. Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has confirmed that the club are not even talking to the attacking midfielder about a new contract now.

"At the moment it does not make any sense to think about it. Max has to convince the coach that he belongs to the first eleven."
That is basically because his coach Markus Weinzierl doesn't appear to be a fan. If you remember it was confirmed by the players Dad that we had spoken three times about joining during the summer but he chose to stay put.

he has scored one goal in four appearances for Germany and this season has featured in 25 Bundesliga games. His league time by minutes equates to 16.11 games. On the face of it 1 goal and 3 assists doesn't sound like a great return, perhaps the reason his coach sees him as replaceable. He has started 16 league games and been brought on 9 times. He has also started 5 games in the UEFA Europa League and had 2 substitute appearances, started 2 German Cup games and 1 from the substitutes bench.

His boot sponsor is Nike, our kit sponsor next season, his contract finishes on 30 June 2018 and thus in the summer enters the final year of his contract. With that in mind, the fee suggested looks excessive and will only be a starting point for negotiations from the German point of view.

They can't afford to price him out of the market, especially as they have to pay us £17 million for Nabil Bentaleb this summer, as he would be able to leave on a free next summer. Perhaps we take Meyer for the Bentaleb fee and it is all a paper transaction.

Plenty of Schalke players seem to be the subject speculation and we have been linked with them all, Leon Goretzka (£21m), Max Meyer and Sead Kolasinac (free) are reportedly available for a total of £38m.
