Spurs reportedly watching the most sought after player in Spain

TRANSFER TALK

Madrid-based Spanish sports newspaper Marca suggest that 27-year-old (28 in June) Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa is one of the most sought after players in the country.

They say Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Everton, Bayern Munich, Sevilla, Valencia and Atlético Madrid are all taking a keen interest in him.

last summer LaLiga side Sevilla submitted a bid of £6.95 million (€8m - AUS$11.16m - US$8.59m) which was rejected last summer by the clubs president who stopped the sale.

His age counts against him for us and his size, 1.71 m (5 ft 7 in), suggests he wouldn't be the steely defensive midfielder Premier League teams need. He is weak in the air and Premier League teams would simply target that weakness as Manchester United did so successfully against Ryan Mason.

This season Mesa has played 13 games as a defensive midfielder and 11 games as a central midfield, a box-to-box player in the role that Mousa Dembele performs for us.

He extended his contract in November until 2020 and a £26.08 million (€30m - AUS$41.83m - US$32.23m) release clause was inserted, as is normal in Spain. Marca also claim though that negotiations for the player would start at £8.69 million (€10m - AUS$13.94m - US$10.73m).

One goal and 3 assists in 25 games doesn't suggest an attacking or creative threat and he isn't yet a Spanish international, indeed he has never represented his country at any level.

While I am very keen for us to scour Spain for players, I don't think Mesa has the profile we are looking for at Spurs and I'd be surprised if we made a move for him. It seems like a bit of speculation on the part of the Spanish publication, possibly designed to push up his price given the teams mentioned.
